12.49, 12.69, 12.54. Those are the last 100 splits of the top 3. It’s a gear that Kessler/Nuguse have never unlocked as far as I know. The race despite being 3;30 wasn’t fast enough to break the top 3 and their kicks’ top-end speed are just overwhelming for even guys as fast in a time trial as Yared/Hobbs.
Kessler doesn't have those gears? The Kessler who made the Olympic 800m team?

The other big story here is: Ethan Strand has officially arrived as an elite pro!

Doesn't matter what your 800 PR is if you can't kick at the end of a 1500.

Correct.
When I saw 58 for the 2nd lap, I immediately thought, "Wait a minute. When Jakob run a 58 mid-race, we know it's over for him."
At that point, I was pretty darn confident Nuguse wasn't winning but not making the team and looking like crap? That's a whole othe rstory.
I'd like to see the splits for last year. I think Yared moving forward needs to either make it a pure time trial or not lead the whole thing. There is a psychological toil to leading. And leading and not really doing anything ith the pace is a deadly sin.
It would be better to just lead and relax like Centro than sort of lead a B pace.
Did Yared not watch Jakob at Paris last year??? Same strategy, same result (except one place further back). Times have changed and you can’t just run away from the field anymore.
How should he have run it, knowing those guys could outkick him? If he pushed at 800 they would have hung on.
Yared just ran a dumb race. You can't lead from the front against those massive kickers. Losing strategy but he's still in insane shape.
It’s what he did last year, but he messed it up a bit. Last year he rested more on lap 2 (58.36 vs 58.99). That bunched up the field in a way that was good. This year Strand and Koech got to cruise in lane 1 so the faster speed didn’t hurt them. He ran the 3rd lap exactly the same and it was straightforward for everyone to wait until 300 to go to wind up for a kick. Last year Yared was 13.55/12.95/13.04. This year 13.59/13.46/13.77. I think little things like leading a little earlier, getting no chance to relent (with no early Hocker pass) and just a worst day got him. But I don’t think he can close with the top 3.

Are we finally ready to stop listening to the boomer fans? They led a lot of people on here to believe the top 3 guys they’ve crowned, were shoulders and above better than the rest.
