If you do some research and look up Coach Smith on his assessment of Nico and his now ability to kick off a fast pace you will find your answer.

Your prime as a distance (5k-10k) runner is your late 20s. Nico Young just turned 23 last week. He's young AF. He's going to keep getting better as the training compounds, and will probably be a Gold Medal favorite or at least threat by 2028 Olympics.

Boring, I know. Everyone wants to hear that there are secret workouts or some new approach to training, but it’s just grinding out consistent work without taking time off for injuries. FWIW, Smith strikes me as a very smart coach. He gets results by not rushing and just allowing athletes to work within their current capabilities rather than pushing the envelope at the first signs of breakthrough. I hope that Nico’s brothers move to Flagstaff after graduation and get some real coaching from Smith.
His form looks more balanced and smooth, head staying mostly still and not side to side. A bit back in a thread similar to this, someone posted that Smith had made adjustments to his foot strike? That he's able to put more power down into his stride and bounce forward quicker? Sounds odd, try it some time running, it feels like it works, but I'm sure they built into it slowly to avoid stress fractures, etc
Why did it take almost four years to obtain those adjustments to his form? Why didn’t Brosnan get it done while Young was still in HS? In response to the other poster, don’t other professional runners focus full-time, after college?

I'm gonna guess you were one of the individuals who was utterly shocked when Nico broke 1:54 in the 800 as well.

John G asked this after the 10,000m- he said he has been working on it for the past 2 years- speed endurance work, form drills, making sure his form doesn’t break down, and change of pace/fartlek type work.

Running a mid/low 5x.x does not require much fast twitch. That's why we're all distance runners on here, because we don't stumble onto the track with 47 400m ability.
It's almost as if getting into better shape than everone else allows to access that speed at the end of races (especially compared to a past self that would be redlined with 400m to go & be too fatigued to access that gear that is now accessible).

Hell, Cooper Teare was out kicking Grant in Pac12 1500s a few years back. Do you think Grant is now a world beater bc he's been working on his kick lolol? (Answer: of course not, bc Grant's coach is on here regularly touting his high capacity for massive blocks of aerobic training, that they rarely run faster than mile pace in training due to injury risk, and that Grant's kick COMES FROM HIS FITNESS).
