This is crazy, Jakob Ingebrigtsen hasn't run a 800m in 4 or 5 years and his fast 5k time is from 2020 or 2021. If he did all out in either events today he would have the 5k world record and I'm sure he would be in the 1:44's for 800 meters.
I really hope Laros runs the 800 at a major championship one day. I feel like his 800 is very much world class level as well.
For someone who’s winning the Bowerman Mile in 3:45.9, placing 3rd in a European U23 semi—even in 1:44.19–doesn’t prove that there’s sense in him seriously investing in the event. In this brand new, crazy era of the 800, he basically needs to break 1:43 to be considered a dual 800/1500 guy given his level in the longer event. Not saying he can’t do that, necessarily, but he hasn’t shown it yet.

Yeah when one has run 7:29 at 19 and 3:45 and 1:44.19 at 20, that seems like a decent blueprint for how an engineer might create a 1500m specialist who will also potentially be a threat eventually in a championship 5000m.
I really like the way he is putting his season together. These 5000m races he is running are perfect for him - he doesn't need to be in 12.45 DL races, these slower truly tactical affairs where he can run 4000m relaxed and work on his power at the end of races.
I also think winning the Bowerman mile was a psychological turning point for him - I think he's primed to really make some noise in Tokyo.

It’s always health with Laros. He’s unafraid. I thought he’d be more in the mix last year but he didn’t have the fitness for faster than 3:29. Now he does, and just needs to make it 8 more weeks.
And if I'm not mistaken, only one runner in history has gone faster than Laros in BOTH the 800m (1:44.19) and 5000m (13:10.86), and that runner is Said Aouita (1:43.86 and 12:58.39). Pretty darn good for someone who is still only 20.
(It'd worth noting that Laros and Alan Webb both has the same exact PB in the 5000m with 13:10.86, and Webb's 800m PB is 1:43.84)
Did Aouita the cheater ever break 1:44 other than in 1988 - when he was training as an 800m runner and didn't run anything longer than a mile (and even his mile speed seemed to be affected, which is why he probably pulled out of the 1500 in Seoul to save face)?
And Laros keeps delivering. Won the Gold in the 5000m a couple of minutes ago. 13:44.74, with a final lap of 54.11. 1.06 seconds ahead of Nicholas Griggs (Ireland). He runs the 800m final tomorrow 17:00 (05:00 PM) local time. (Bergen is 6 hours ahead of New York, and 9 hours ahead of Los Angeles)
(Also, shout out to Andreas Fjeld Halvorsen (who represented the same club as me for a while) for finishing 5th in 13:47.52 (still only 19))
Laros’ last 200 was 25.1, that’s some great closing speed. Slow race, but still impressive
Yes, he was on fire in the last 200m of this race. In a league of his own. Laros won the 5000m in the European athletics team championships (June 24th) in Madrid in 13:44.45 with a final lap of 52.4ish, beating big names like Lobalu (2nd), Ndikumwenayo (3rd) and Crippa (5th) in the process. He ran his 5000m PB in the Meeting Nikaia in Nice may 31st in 13:10.86. Does anyone know what his final lap was in the race. I can't find any videos or splits from that race. I'd love to know

He fell off the pace in that so I’d doubt it was noteworthy.

The Bowerman mile was crazy. His final 400m was 53.3ish (Nuguse did like 56.3ish for the final lap) And his final 109m was 13.84 (Nuguse had 15.58), and a final 100m of 12.6ish (Nuguse had 14.2ish)

I'd love to see an injury free Jakob in a fast 800m race somewhere soon. If I'd had to guess, I'd say he's capable of something in the 1:44.7 to 1:45.5 range.
He's 12th on the Norwegian all-time list with his 1:46.44, he could definitely climb a lot in those rankings. The 1st place (1:42.58, Vebjørn Rodal) and 2nd place (1:43.69, Atle Douglas) is obviously to much to ask for. 4th place (1:45.42, Tor Øivind Ødegård) should be within reac, and 3rd place (1:44.57, Tobias Grønstad) might be slightly without reach. An 800m with Jakob would be interesting, and a 1000m with Jakob would be even more interesting (I'm guessing that he's capable of a 2:13-high or 2:14-low)

At his best I think Jakob was capable of 1:45.11 and 2:12.88 or so. Remember he ran 4:43.13 so we know he could run a decent 1000m.
I think you're right. Probably the closest after Webb for the 800m among those better at 5000m are Matthew Centrowitz (1:44.62/13:00) and Augustine Choge (1:44.86/12:53.66). Lopez Lomong ran 1:45.58/12:58.78.
Good point
I tried making a list over best combos of 800m and 5000m PBs. Here's the list (I'm probably missing some)
Said Aouita: 2424, 1:43.86 (1208) & 12:58.39 (1208)
Steve Ovett 2338, 1:44.09 (1201) & 13:20.06 (1137)
Cole Hocker (1:45.13 & 12:57.82(i)) and Yared Nuguse (1:44.77 & 13.02.09(i)) obviously belongs on the list. The tricky part is the with indoor marks, the scoring gets very different. I agree that a 12:57 indoor is better than a 12:57 outdoor, but the scoring tables converts Hocker's 12:57 indoor to a 12:44 low outdoor, and Nuguse's 13:02 indoor to a 12:47 high outdoor. That is way too generous. If we uses outdoor points Hocker gets 2387 (1169 +1218) and Nuguse gets 2382 (1180 + 1202)
A slight typo from me. Aouita's 12:58.39 is worth 1216 points, NOT 1208

Looks like 12.1 for the final 100, easing up and waving at the end. Not off a fast pace, but that's pretty wild.
