If it goes out fast he won’t make the team in this heat and humidity. He would need the standard before in a controlled European diamond league race where he just jumps in the middle and rides the wave to a PR. Since he doesn’t have it, best he can hope for is a slow tactical race to try to win the 10k and get a berth based on points for worlds. That’s it.
Does he have enough ranking points to qualify? I saw he’s top 60 in the world in 10k rankings right now. Would a 3rd place finish at trials get him there?
Given his situation, one might question his lack of racing to get a higher ranking. His entire season rides on running the race of his life at USAs no matter if 5k or 10k. I'm all for dreaming, but maybe have a backup insurance plan?
In a past post-race interview, he said he doesn't care about times. So, it's kind of hard to root for the guy to make teams if he's going to be that dense.
If he doesn't care about times and just wants to kill a race, he has the best chance of top 3 in the 10k.
By not caring about times, he’s essentially saying he’s complacent with being a middling US professional instead of striving for something more (global greatness). This is disappointing
Hunter is ranked #58 in the 10000m with a performance score of 1184 (1187 from a 27:24 at the TEN, 1182 from a 4th place 27:53 at the trials last year). Probably should have targeted a low 27 this spring. Note that 1st at a category B meet (national trials) for 10000m is 60; first for 5000 is 70. If he could get a performance score of 1240 total he'd probably be in the 10000 - that'd be a 1293 or a 26:56 + 60 (if first) which is impossible.

He would probably need to win the race. Say he finishes 3rd and Nico, Blanks, Fisher or Woody finished 4th he’s not jumping the guys with the standard. They would have more points and the standard. Bottom line going forward, you’re going to need the standard in these trails to make the USA team. USA distance is really good

Probably should target 5k first and foremost.

Yes if he cares about making a team he should run the 5. I suspect it’s his best event anyway. If he gets top 3 in sub-13:20 he’s dropping a 13:37 performance.

Pretty disappointing to see that after the trials last year he didn’t make it a priority to have the standard this year.
I’ve been wondering about him and copper teare. At this point, they both have to go all in on 10k or steeple. Seems like Drew has pretty much figured that out but I don’t think coop has. I just don’t know how guys like them can look at the 1500/5k and think they can make it.

How has drew figured that out? He only ran one 10k this year and didn’t try a 2nd time to get the standard after not getting it at the Ten. He hasn’t tried the steeple.
Cooper sticking to the 1500/5k this year makes more since seeing that he at least gets opportunities to race high quality fields (Grand Slam, diamond league, etc). He definitely should try the steeple though

Seems to me like Drew is going for it in the 10k since he’s entered and it’s first. Not really sure why he hasn’t chased the standard harder though.
As for coop, I can’t understand staying in the 5k and I especially can’t understand staying in the 1500. If he had only run the 5k last year, I think he probably would’ve made it. But it’s so much deeper this year that he doesn’t seem to have a real shot to me, regardless of the quality of fields he’s raced.

Yes, I figure that if he wins the 5000m at the trials, he would have enough points to get in by points. I assume that the 5000m will be won in sub 13:10. The top guys won’t want to leave it to a jog and kick and give Hocker a free ticket

When you say he’s “going for it in the 10k”, do you mean he’s going to try to get top 3 AND the standard? Or is he just going to try to get top 3 and not try to get a qualifying standard?
It seems so pointless for him to aim for anything less than a standard that would get him into worlds. I’m sure it would be a “feel good” “dad strength” story like his 4th place finish last year, but it would be so much cooler if he had higher goals than that

Do you think he has a better chance at winning the 5k OR running the standard + 3rd place in the 10k?

I don’t think that winning the 10,000 would give him enough points.
A couple of people mentioned Drew just needing to win the 5/10. Let’s pump the breaks here. Drew running 3:33 is great. But let’s not act like he’s in the same fitness ballpark as Grant, Nico and Graham. He’s not. Those guys have run 20+ seconds faster than Drew’s PR for 5,000. I don’t see a scenario where, if those three guys are healthy and race the 5/10, Drew beats them. He just won’t. Even if it’s tactical, I can maybe see him out kicking Blanks in the 10. If it’s tactical in the 5, though, it seems really unlikely. Tactical in the 5 could also be a sub-13:10 race like last year. Doubling back from the 10, I doubt Drew has a 5k PB in him, likely with a 53-55s last lap required to be top 3.

Even if he put kicked Graham for 3rd it wouldn’t matter. He doesn’t have the standard.
