What’s scary about Quincy Wilson is that he’s such an extreme outlier. I think many here are right — I really don’t think he would go faster than 20.5-20.7 in the 200m. His speed endurance at the 400m is almost unparalleled.
If he either hits one last growth spurt (very possible) or even if he doesn’t and gets to that high 19 or maybe even 20 flat 200 speed, he’s going to go deep into the 43s.
And if ever becomes a 19.7/19.8 guy, it’s night night 400m world record. Odds may be against that happening, but it’s not really that far fetched either. He’s a freak.
I doubt he could go much faster than 20.8, perhaps 20.7
From watching him run (and his 800 last year), it feels like he operates almost entirely off of special endurance with an inhuman ability to either buffer or clear lactic acid. He holds his top speed for an unreasonably long amount of time and just doesn't slow down in that last 100.
You are not running 44.10 with a 20.7 PR.
Unless maybe you are running 1:42-1:43 in the 800m like Korir or Juantorena but that is an even rarer case and definitely not Quincy's realm
Speed is vital no matter what. He said himself he shot out like a bullet, so he probably split really close to his current 200m PB which indicates that he can absolutely run much faster in the open.
But yes, his 800 last year proves he has strong speed endurance but even still he is likely in the mid-to-low 20.xx range for all out 200
I hope he runs the 800m a little more often
Yes you are
Christopher Morales-Williams 44.05/20.93
Yousseff Ahmed 43.93/20.87
Khaleb McCrae 43.91/20.85
Michael Cherry 44.03/20.72
Anthony Zambrano 43.93/20.61
Abdalelah Haroun 44.07/21.16
Champion Allison never ran a 200 in 2022 but I doubt he would have been much faster than 20.7 either. It was more common in the mid 2010s than it is now but a lot of these top level 400 guys are operating entirely off of special endurance.
Question -- is he going to grow any more, or is this it?
He's only 17. The odds that he grows are probably much better than the odds that he doesn't.
He's already taller than both of his parents. I coached him in middle school and he hasn't grown more than a couple of inches since then. We have a good laugh about it every time I'm with his family.
Has he ran a 200 this past year? just how fast is he? He doesn’t look like a sub 20 second 20m guy but he’d have to be under 21
He's never officially broken 21 which is interesting. But he has 20.5x minimum
it is natural to want to speculate on human potential, but all the same, Quincy is 17 year old kid. he has achieved more at his age in one sport than many achieve in all aspects of their lives. maybe he doesn't end up pursuing running at a high level at all
with that said, having seen his open 600 at millrose last year, and also remembering he ran 33.11 indoors.. I am skeptical of many indoor/outdoor conversions, especially at the shorter distances, but someone way more knowledgable can tell you those performances are no joke at any age. dude has a tenacity I just do not think can be trained/taught/implemented. you just have to want it. sky is the limit for him, and we'll be lucky to witness his success in whatever he chooses to pursue
My wife and I were sitting in the stands. When Wilson rounded the final curve, having pushed all the way into the lead, the feeling in the stands was electric. One moment everybody was sitting; the next moment we were all standing. The video captures the drama, which is that you were SURE he was going to crumble, stagger, lose it--Daedalus flying too close to the sun--but somehow he held it together through the line.
Hell of a gritty race from the kid. Clearly the high point of the evening. There were lots of kids his age in the stands--HS runners who'd raced earlier. 17 years old. He beat all the pros.

I think you've nailed what I saw. Speed endurance. He didn't just power past everybody else for the first 300, but he kept pushing and held it. This was NOT the same kid who faded to last (or almost last) in the 4 x 400 heats. I thought for sure that kid was going to show up with 100 to go, but just the reverse happened--and it was shocking.
Last year was an electric year for Quincy. Coming back after that for an encore is always difficult. It looks like Quincy will do it with style. I think this kid has a good head on his shoulders, and a good support system.
....in the 4 x 400 heats at last year's Paris Olympics.
He pulled his hamstring 7 days earlier. It was the reason he never ran on the mixed 4x400 (He was supposed to), and ran 47 in the heats of the 4x400.
This.
He wasn't going to run at all, but they were out of options. Quincy Hall and Michael Norman were injured from the 400 final the night before. Rai's 400 hurdles final was later that day. That was it for the relay pool unless they wanted to put Grant Holloway in there right after his hurdles final, but that wasn't ever going to happen.
I'm glad he finally discussed the injury earlier this year. I hated hearing everyone talk about how he blew it when he was actually having a hard time even jogging a few days before the prelims.
