So for example, during the Bowerman Mile, Kara Goucher, who it pains me to listen to, and her clown partner, is it Lee, they never even mention Niels Laros during the race, even as he is finishing like a runaway train, and gaining on Nuguse with every step. They totally blew that call, and didn’t even seem to know who he was right after the race. It is just embarrassing.
Yes it's an issue.
It was the same in the 5000m - it only seemed to dawn on the team that she might break the WR with 400m to run. They were 11.14 at 4000m and had just run a 2.51 km to get there and that didn't seem to register at all. With 800m to go Goucher says "they are going to look at that clock and realize they are going to be awfully close to that low 14 minute mark" - uhh yeah, and that's the WR?!
In the 3000m SC Javi is trying so hard to get the WR that she does this weird janky triple jump move across the line and the best Diffey comes up with is "Javi is gonna win, and she's gonna set a meet record". Kara Goucher "wow".
1500 - as you said.
Diffey strikes me as a guy who became the "track and field commentator" because he get's paid and nobody else wanted the job. I couldn't imagine having a conversation with him in a bar about the sport because it would be embarrassing. Goucher has been doing this a long time now but just hasn't seemed to work on the art or craft of commentating a race. She sits there and watches and simply describes what is happening when it's her cue. It's rough.
What needs to change is NBC give up its monopoly "broadcast rights."
Broadcasting should not even be a thing at this point. Legacy entertainment has certain sports in a chokehold. Noone benefits from exclusive rights than NBC, except NBC, no matter how much they pay

Kara has more or less admitted on her podcast that she doesn't know who a lot of the competitors are and does little research.

Must be nice to have a gig like that and not give two f-s.
And yet NBC keeps firing up those ACH transfers huh.
Diffey didn’t know his name though. He should not be announcing but Swangard was doing the PA. He was also obsessing over Tsegay constantly when N’getich was right there and worthy of discussion. Kara knew her but was pronouncing her name awkwardly. Much prefer World feed to Diffey.
Why do you need to have someone tell you what you are seeing? I have no problem tuning the commentators out. If the lap splits are shown on the screen, I don’t need them at all. Do the spectators at the meet, want someone sitting next to them giving a blow by blow analysis of what they’re watching?
You cannot be serious! Thoughtsleader knows who the contestants are, so of course he doesn’t need a broadcaster to tell him who they are, and neither do I, BUT many people who might be casually tuning in have no earthly idea who some of these athletes are, and that is one of the roles of a professional broadcaster, to be a bit of an expert on the scene, and delivering this to the audience at home. This should be elementary, and it is inexcusable that these two are seemingly not capable of it. After all, in a horse race, the announcers do a great job of telling me which horse is doing what, and to me many of the horses look alike, so it is even more challenging for the announcers to distinguish them, yet they do.

Announcers (or good ones at least) also drop insight from talking to the athletes and coaches. They might know a key workout, an illness/injury we hadn’t heard about, pacing details/race plans, training progress etc. Diffey gives absolutely nothing for the most part, and Kara is a little too rambly for me. There’s also not much discussion from her on pacing/context of times etc. which is pretty important. When a race works out well for Diffeyhe has good excitement level like last years Paris 1500 final, but if anything goes sideways he’s pretty lost.

We can recognize the runners so we don’t need a horse race announcer.
It seems like you’re becoming angry on behalf of viewers that probably don’t exist. How many people are casually tuning in on USATF.TV or Peacock? None?

I am not becoming angry. I expect more from broadcasters. You are too narcissistic to grasp the notion that your are not the only type of person watching.

That is not true. She talks frequently about how much research she does before each meet. I enjoy her commentary.
Did not mention Laros until maybe 5-10m from finish.
@ 4:51 on video.
Please get your hearing checked. They didn’t mention Neils Laros until some time after the race was over, maybe around the 5:12 mark, more than 15 seconds after the race ended.
Kara "doesn't she(He)They look comfortable" Koucher adds absolutely nothing to the broadcast. Considering her background as a runner, you'd think she would add some insight to the race or the competitors. Hire Steve Cram and Paula Radcliffe. At least they can speak well and seem to know something about the race and those competing.

Not everyone is like you. Good announcing is not going to turn someone with zero interest in a sport, into lifetime fans.
There are other niche sports that you don’t follow. Is it poor announcing that keeps you way?

Cliffs Notes: if the announcers do not know who the competitors even are, they should step aside.

as someone admittedly not as informed as to all of the competitors or nuances of the races as a number of folks on this board I want someone announcing who is, and the NBC crew is not. I have moved to the Diamond League stream with VPN.

Gaw. Give the announcers a break. They paid their own airlines, Motel 6, McDonalds, just to inform you on how real, authentic Olympians race.
Think of the sacifice of the female Announcers for Christ Sakes. They duck out on the kids to give you fair scoop on-air. When they get home, hubby slaps them around for days for neglecting the kids. The mother-in-law goes on a tirade. Grandpa doesn't care watches ESPN as usual.
