One of the traditions at the Pre Classic is that the meet always ends with the Bowerman Mile.
Not in 2025. Even though we have an American Oregon grad on his home track coming off an Olympic gold medal. Running against the American record holder, who is also the bronze medalist.
The women's 1500 is also terrific -- Faith Kipyegon, Jessica Hull, Georgia Hunter Bell, Diribe Welteji, Nikki Hiltz -- but it's curious to bump a men's mile that is probably more compelling to American fans.
Either Nike wants to keep Faith in the spotlight after Breaking4, or they think she is going to break the world record on Saturday. Or both :-)
course its bumped, they know Honker will be finishing 8th - 10th. the guys had his once in a lifetime fluke result, usual business has resumed and hes been worse than normal this season. can easily see him fail to make the team for the world champs

Not sure exactly where Hocker will finish but he seems like less of a sure bet than Kipyegon. Meet organizers are surely aware that other shoe brands could take the world record and/or a podium sweep in the men's mile. How would Nike like for Nuguse/Kessler/Wightman to go 1-2-3 in 3:43?
As far as odds for a world title this year, I don't think Hocker's odds go down too much even if he is soundly beaten this weekend. I imagine he'll likely be in better shape later in the season, and if he has similar fitness as the other guys by the time the world championships roll around, I'd still consider him the favorite even if he hasn't actually won anything this season.
Yeah even though the events in the TV window are somewhat evenly split (6 womens events: 100,400,800,1500,5000,3SC vs 5 mens events: 100, 200, 400, 400h, mile) this is obviously a more womens event oriented lineup.
To have only 1 mens MD event vs 4 womens MD events is quite significant. The US is arguably the strongest mens 800m nation on the planet now - seems odd there isn't at least a mens 2 lap event.
And yes, I think it's absolutely a statement that they are finishing with the womens 1500 and not the mens mile - and it definitely ties into the breaking 4 and their reset on a corporate level. I said it the other day after that event - running and specifically women in running is internally the number focus at that brand now. When you look at the program and more importantly what the presentation will be in terms of what's televised, this is very evident.
This might seem like a women's event oriented lineup, but jaded me says that the women's 5,000 and 3,000 SC are not "events": those will be platforms for "let's check in with [annoncer] to see what's happening in [insert your least favorite field event here]" and/or advertising breaks.
The never-ending line of BooBirds, Secondguessers and Naysayers on this forum claiming the mile is overhyped. You've only ruined the sport for yourselves, not anyone else. You've picked your favorite, which is fine but rather than lift them up, you tear others down. This is not the same as hoping for great performance through great competition. You have a twisted sense of reality.
I believe that is a result of your lack of interest in watching the details of all of the top athletes including new surprises and not being capable of making intelligent, open minded observations about up to the minute trends.
The only guarantee anyone has at any time is that they've done all they can to put themselves in a position to have a chance. Fortunately, for us, many have which makes things even more interesting and exciting. Yet some haven't shown their cards/fitness/race sharpness for awhile now. Pre is early for some. Unfortunately, injury is part of the game as well. Can Ingebritsen carry his fitness through this and get back in time? Can those that haven't shown us much lately be ready, Nuguse, Hocker, Kerr etc..
Just keep watching and paying attention. 5 guys can be rearranged 5 different ways in one second. That's how flipping close things are these days. And, they are only as good as the next race.
I'm not saying they should have done that, but it's still possible to enjoy both races with this setup. I understand it's a debate of which is the better finale, but that doesnt mean they've ruined either race. Just watch and enjoy.

I don't necessarily disagree - so why are they on the program? I know that the DL has to get it's quota of certain disciplines run across the season but a meet like Pre I feel has some pretty significant sway with what they want to put on.
So while the womens SC is on (I'm sorry it is by some margin the least interesting track event - it just is), they can be cutting to the field events and adverts - why not have a mens SC with the guy from your home nation who nearly won the Olympic Games last season and is a Nike athlete? I just feel like only one mens MD event at a meeting named after a "legendary" US mens middle distance runner seems notable.
ICE is staying at hotels all over Eugene. I wonder how much they are paying per night. Is the City, State paying for the raids on Hayward Field tomorrow?
The unfortunate implication of this is not that we are now going to end the meet with a potentially amazing women's 1500 but that the meet organizers don't believe there is the potential for a men's mile WR shot.
So is one being asked to presume that for the most recent 26 or whatever editions of the Pre Classic that if the organizers held the Bowerman Mile as the last event that this had any correlation whatsoever with whether they were thinking there was the potential for a world record? This appears rather implausible to those of us who are still capable of critical running.
