Mehary is (sensibly) out of the 5,000. Another notable scratch is Simon Koech from the Steeple, though this might be due to Kenyan Trials moving up a week.

That's going to be a tough event. The hole is only 4.25" in diameter; I don't think the shot will fit. Even if it does, they'll probably break a few putters.

I'm looking forward to my Dutchies in the women's 400mh & 400m.
Klaver has lane 3, as she did in Paris, after being on the outside in her first races. Initially she was going out too slow on the outside, then in Paris she hit 200m in a stupidly fast 23.3 (which was faster than her then SB over 200m..). She obviously died in the home straight, but it was apparently a test. Since then she has run 22.59 over 200m. She is the only runner in the field that has improved her time in each race this season. She is only 6th fastest on SB.
Bol has Muhammad outside her this time. The American started faster than Bol in Stockholm so it will be interesting to see if Bol allows her to get ahead or whether she will go with her stride-for-stride. It will be great if Bol can get into the 51's and set a WL. Also intriguing to see the US battle between Muhammad and Cockrell, with less than 3 weeks to the US Champs.
The wavelights will be less than useless for the 1000m. Nobody in the field has the slightest chance of running close to the world record. The best three in the field are Reekie (2:31.11 - five years ago), Chepchirchir (2:31.24) and Wiley (2:31.49). The WR is equivalent to a 1:55.15 for 800m. I don't think anybody will even attempt to go with the pacer. Would have been better to set the lights at around 2:30.5-2:31.
The WR for the steeple is slightly possible for El Bakkali. It would take a 4-second PR but he could separate himself from the field early and make it a time trial on the rail with two pacers. I doubt he will get the record but at least it is possible.

I hope Aaliyah Butler gets under 49 She won NCAA's in 49.26 Last week she ran 49.8 so hopefully she gets a big Personal Best. She is a Wonderful Little Girl, I don't understand why more people on Letsrun are not her fans as much as I am, She is Wholesome, very likeable, everyone should be her fan.
100% a WR attempt. I have to imagine Wanyonyi and possibly Arop have it on their minds every time they stops on the track.
I agree that the depth will hurt them, but possibly not as much as you might think. Several of the faster guys like Arop and Sedjati have shown preference towards going out around 50.1-50.4 and running a near-even race, and I expect the race to be strung out enough going into the bell that it won't matter too much.
But that's exactly why I think there is a possibility it works against them. Even 50.0 - 50.5 is where at least 7-8 of that field want to be and that is a 4m bubble. This new current trend of considerably slower opening 200/400's is actually counter a field being strung out. At least for me, I think about sub/low 49 second openings of the golden era of 800m runner where the first 200m's were absurdly fast (in the high 23's).
I'm not saying it is totally counting anything out and they guys almost always figure it out - but it is a slight shift in philosophy of the event that with really deep, top fields, make it worth noting.
If there is an event that needs a rabbit for world record attempts it's the 800. The rabbit could be the guy that likes to front run. Everyone knows their own strengths and can fall in line. Kinda like 2012 Rudisha led parade of fastest times for places 1-8. Problem is, there's a crowd within a shorter window. So it's NASCAR jockeying for position. Split the group and run 2 races if it's a record that is that important. Like earlier poster said, they'll work it out. Probably the guy that decides today is the day to run 1:39.99 to keep things strung out.

How does the 800m need a rabbit, if the current world record was set without a rabbit? In that race positions 2-8 might support your claim, but position 1 (WR, Rudisha) is the most important.
