Dumas seems like the type who just doesn’t want to lose and pushes herself to the brink to secure the victory. It was evident when she dove at the line in the 400 yesterday. It was evident in the 800 when she had a surge in pace with 300 to go to and then managed to find another gear with about 50 meters to go to hold off Emmry Ross who ran an outstanding 2:00.xx herself. Dumas is the real deal
Someone get her in a competitive 800 with fresh legs and I could seriously see her scare 1:58.xx - her loping stride reminds me of Mary Cain but with more power (as evidenced by the 51.14 400 speed)
Only a junior and recently dropping times in chunks - this could be one of the greatest female track athletes in history by the time she graduates HS
nice to witness the emergence of a high school legend in real time. also worth noting Natalie's mother was a two time D3 national champion until she had to stop running when she got pregnant with Natalies older sister (who is now a runner at the University of Delaware). She stayed with the team to support them and went into labor in the stands AT Penn Relays that year and gave birth later that night. about 20 years later she went back to Franklin Field to compete in a masters race for the first time since college. in the stands was her daughter Natalie watching her and cheering her on, inspired by her moms story of perseverance. and now Natalie has used that inspiration to complete the circle by emerging as this years Queen of New Balance Outdoor Nationals and another folk hero to add to the long list of Franklin Field folk heroes while her mom cheered her on from the same stands where she went into labor decades before. so happy for both of them.

That's a great story. But how in the world did you find out about all that?

from her mom who wrote about it last year.
interesting to note that Dumas is just the second high school girl in US history to run under 52 in the 400 and under 5 in the 1600 (the first is Athing Mu). and she may be the ONLY girl to ever run under 12.25 in the 100 and under 5 in the 1600. would be interested in having that one fact checked.
Rabbit or no rabbit, people don't usually improve 2.6 seconds in an 800 in only 2 weeks.
High School girls and even ncaa girls do this quite often.
You don’t know what you're talking about. Name THREE high school or college girls with a 2:02 or faster PR who improved their PR by 2.6 seconds in just 2 weeks. Guess what? You can't do it.

I read an article that said Dumas was the only one. But I don't know if that is accurate or not.

Laura Roesler went 11 something in the 100 and won multiple XC state titles. I have to imagine she could have run sub-5, though i'm not sure she actually did.

Appears to be correct, however, I believe Laura Roesler would have done it around 2008-2010 range if she ever ran the 1600. She ran sub-12 for the 100 and also won the cross country state title. I think she won state titles at 100, 200, 400, 800 and XC in the same season.
Not sure why there is surprise that she dropped her 800 meter time by 2-3 seconds. She was surely doubling, tripling, maybe even quadrupling during the regular season, all on the same day, and usually without competition. So here she only has to run a single race in the day and is pushed, yes she's going to be faster.
The mistake that is made (on this thread and elsehwhere, it's common) is that assuming that a HS runner's PR represents their best & ultimate time. That's true if the runner focuses on a single event and does it constantly, but for those who run multiple races those numbers are only guidelines.
I wouldn't be shocked to see Dumas run 1:58x in the 800, if that were the only race for her on the weekend and she had to chase somebody to the finish line. Surprised, perhaps, but not shocked.

My guess is she hasn’t had to completely go into the well until now against the best of the best from around the nation.
She barely ran the 800 until the NJ championship season and the Meet of Champions race was what seemed to be her first all out effort (2:02) at the 800. That was her third race of the day.
Also worth noting she ran a 4:55 1600 (I think this was her only attempt) and she ran XC in the fall.

In the 400mh, watch particularly at her getting over the first three hurdles of the race (when fatigue hadn’t set in)! I’m not sure how to describe it, but she crushes them. 👀
