Here's a simpler way of contextualizing Lutkenhaus' performance: our top 1500m high school boys this year are running 9-10 seconds slower than the top men in the world the past two years. We should therefore hope our top 800m high school boys can run within 4.5-5 seconds of the world's best men. That's what Lutkenhaus is now doing. Way to go, Cooper!
It should be more than half the difference at 800m vs 1500m, but CL is actually LESS than half the difference, as he's running within 3-4 seconds of the world's best. Truly amazing.
Can we also get a shout out for Brodey Lutes, the Marshfield kid (Prefontaine's high school) running 1:47.7 for second place! That is not too shabby either! What a great run for those guys in rainy, cold, 55° weather. Is 1:47 the fastest ever losing time in an high school race?

Age 17 record is 1:44.51 Krzysztof Roznicki Poland. Burgin 1:44.14 age 18. I could see Lutkenhaus just breaking these over next two years and challenging the Brazier's record at age 19.
Lutkenhaus is a 16-year old sophomore. What is the 16-year old record?
It would rank him 8th in the NCAA this year. The NCAA champion has a SB which is only 0.10 faster than that. So a HS Soph runs a 1:45.45
Middle school girls are running sub 4:50 all over the place
The top HS girls runs 9:17 for 2 miles
A 31 year old is running 3:27.49. His best at a European championship is 7th
An 18 year old is running 3:27.72
A 25 year old guy who had a PB of 1:47.0 sixteen months ago recently ran 1:42.43
A 30 year old European who has never medaled in any European championship (or world or Olympic) recently broke the European 5000m record
Times are all over the place
I forgot. A 21 year old French guy (ANSELMIN) improves from 3:35.46 in 2024 to 3:31.6. His first year running the 1500m was 2024. He did have a 1:45.42 PB in 2023, but still…
His physical development is closer to a senior but still expecting great things. Granville's record was actually fairly weak among the distance marks as well so someone shattering it was long overdue.
How soredick can you get? He looks like a normal soph. If anyone was developed, it was Granville, watched him run for years out here and we looked older, like Webb.
Not sure why you think I am mad or irritated by Lutkenhaus breaking the record. I was explaining why a sophomore could beat a record that had stood for 30 years. I bare no I'll will towards Lutkenhaus. I agree that Granville and Webb looked much more developed for their age than usual.

Owen Powell ran 1:46.63 and lost last week
Having him in the race helped Lutkenhaus get the record though

Bodey is a great kid and just learning the event !
What an amazing year !
Lucian Bone IV just ran 1:46.87 to lose the Under 20 championship
