The way Brazier is running in his first couple races, I would be very concerned if I was Hoppel or Hoey. He's obviously in at least 1:42 shape right now. Imagine what he can do in a Diamond League race with real competition. I really like his chances to not only compete for a spot on the US right now, but it's also looking like he has the chance to win a medal at Worlds, and perhaps a title. We have to remember he's done this before, and knowing you've already been to the top is a hell of a confidence booster. I love that he also doesn't have a lot of hard races in his legs so far, as he started his season a bit late. Hoey's been going hard since indoors. That could catch up with him with the season being so long this year.
I've always been a Brazier fan but celebrating a negative split is ignoring the way that race is run these days. In a major race he wouldn't even be within the camera screen with a 52.7. And then he'd be dealing with one talented guy after another already ahead of him.
Today was a huge step. But as a gambler I always keep in mind that power ratings move gradually. The public always wants to take the most recent result and project to the extreme in either direction.

Brazier has always been a positive split guy. I believe the implication with his splits over his last two races vs how he raced in his prime is that he’s playing with his food.
Anyone remember years ago when he practiced indoors being way back to test what would happen if he was boxed in, this reminded me of that. Seems a bit early to start practicing that sort of thing but he sure looked like when he did that

We're celebrating his splits because he can clearly go faster with a few changes. Not many people can even run a 1:43 the way he just did, the hard way, requiring perfect pace control and strength. The potential for him to bust a 1:42, or dare I say it a high 1:41, is very high. As soon as he is in a fast Diamond League race, we might see some real magic happen.
absolutely. From 700-600 his acceleration made it look like the other guys were standing still. This race, above others recently, has got me the most hyped for USAs

No, he was famous for some huge negative split races in high school, which projected huge time drops. They happened and will happen again.
Not that I am not convinced that Brazier is back (this is trending to him having a very good chance to make the team by US Champs)
But feeling a lot of Wayde Van Niekerk off his return. Long time off, and managing to trump competition on return (although in Wayde's case, took a few years)
But once reaching the world champs, becoming a finalist but just not enough to medal again.

I’m talking in his college/pro career. Of course you’re going to run negative splits when the second fastest person in your race is typically 10 seconds slower than you.
I think we are using different wording to make the same point.
i would like to learn about his training during the latest injury periods
who did the surgery?
and speaking of the 800 and the prior conventional wisdom to split 2 seconds plus for the first 400m? i never understood that beyond bro science explanations, and especially the fact that it was almost done at the elite level for best time. which kind of made it a fact... which apparently it is not.
it is looking like even splits is the best for time, back in the day there was a precedent, but rare.
like the ovett russian love child ran, and wottle ran in 72, in a race that i can watch again and again, and get excited every time ,also symonds ran his 142 this way as well. rudisha ran 52 and 50 in africa at his peak ...
my favorite athlete secretariat ran belmont, they say in an all time one off, all time record, running each quarter faster than the previous one, for a record, i think stands today, in a win 31 lengths ahead. and this implies that the horse could have run faster ... as he was still accelerating.
actually in horse racing, given they have like a million data points, negative splits for best time , the odds are almost zero... which makes it "face".
things get interesting when a solid theory has holes blown in it.
