We merged two threads on the same topic and kept the one started by Rojo as Rojo's was started first and its his website. The 2nd thread was titled, "Random Swede runs 12:44 to smack the Africans and set new European record!?"
What's with the "Nico who?" in the thread title, Rojo? Almgren is a seasoned pro still in his prime who ran 12:44. Nico is in his first full year as a pro and ran 12:45 at age 22.

Not too many 5000m guys at this level can run mid-1:45 800m. This guy can medal, though I notice that he made the pace hot after lap 6 (about 6:02 for the last 2400m), rather than really dropping down the last two laps, albeit with no one close to him. At World's, it will probably be close to 13:10 yet again with a very quick last two laps.
It was a European record attempt, he had to push earlier if he wanted to accomplish that. I don't think it was entirely a racing tactic.
Andreas Almgren is hardly random. He’s trained with Jakob in the past. Winning a Diamond League in 12:44 is huge for him though.
Far from random. He was in Spain at a camp with Ingebrigtsen only just this early summer, as well has a pb’s of 26’50 prior and 12’50 prior to this run. Ran well over the country this year also.
His PRs by World Athletics peak quite nicely in the middle:
1156 | 1:45.59 800m June 2015 1216 | 3:32.00 1500m June 2023 1212 | 7:34.28 3000m June 2024 1268 | 12:44.27 5000m June 2025 1238 | 26:52.87 10000m March 2024 1211 | 59:23 Half Marathon Feb 2024
I think he can lay down a sub-7:30 3000m and a 26:45 or so 10000m too
I wouldn’t be surprised if he can run closer to 26:30 now honestly. He ran that 26:52 in a race won by Fisher in 26:52–they made sure the Olympic standard was in the bag, but otherwise it was a kicker’s race. 12:44.27 is worth 26:30ish and the 59:23 half shows he’s not gonna drop off much between 5k and 10k.
he's hardly random. he already has a European Record (10k road). fast time trialist with decent range (1:45 800, 59:23 HM) but he's just not good at tactical/championship races so most ppl don't know about him.
ROJO calling him a Random Swede is hilarious.
I never called him random. Just the opposite.
In actuality, I've been anticipating this race for weeks. My buddy helps coach him and told me he was flying in for it a while ago.
I'm pretty stunned he was able to do that - pushing it all himself the last 2k as it was warmier and windier than Oslo.

I'm poking fun on Nico and American fans. We'd never seen anything like that but three days later, a Swede ran faster all by himself in worst conditions.
Almgren's strength was unreal.
That being said, I'm more impressed by Nico as I got to see a BIG kick. And Big Kicks win medals. It's going to be a great Worlds.

This was more like Grants BU time trial than the Oslo DL.

Mr. Gault has to say something a short while back, it's is very offensive to some posters who are quite religious but more importantly it's becoming repeatedly blasphemy. I'm not trying to embarrass you, just hoping I can HELP stop a habit you may not be aware your doing Sir.

It's not the job of people living in reality to pander to those who believe in fairy tales.

Fun fact, Almgren is the only runner in history to run 1:45 or better in the 800 and sub 27 in the 10k.
