Why frame it as he "DESTROYS" Hoppel? Why not just focus on Hoey's performance? It's not like they were they were the only 2 runners in the race.
Why not focus on the performance of the winner of the race? Or the guy who finished in 2nd? They both ran faster than either of the guys mentioned in the thread title.

This is better. If Hoppel finished right behind Hoey, I'd say go for "destroys". Would it be over the top? Yeah but it fits the Letsrun style as you noted.
But finishing 5 seconds back in an 800 is a different story. That's not normal healthy Hoppel. It's kicking him when he's down and would be in poor taste to say destroyed or devastated.

Amazing has the American Record for over 30 years then it gets broken about 5 years ago, now in the last ear 2 Americans ran faster than Grey. and A few years ago you get very few 1:42's then last year and this year 1:42 is routine. Those Carbon Plated Shoes have made the extremely rare times now expected yet the Women's 800 is still standing from 1983 and only Hodgekinson is anywhere near it, but over 1 second in an 800 is still a lot.
