Eagleeye gave a pretty good explanation about muscle recovery in 36-48 hours. I’d add that doing small amounts of very easy running instead of an off day can sometimes actually reduce soreness for me, I don’t know the exact mechanism but I’d assume it’s stretching out muscles or something similar. Also, as mentioned by eagleeye, if the training philosophy functions mostly on sub threshold the necessary recovery will be less, whereas if it’s mostly very intense stuff more recovery will be needed.
However something I think that often goes overlooked in training philosophies is the mental aspect. Training every single day, even if not intensely, may prevent a runner from ever really “disconnecting” from the sport. This can lead to very intense relationships with the sport. I’ve observed that these intense attitudes can often become very negative especially after an injury, a bad race, or even a bad workout. Of course there are certainly ways to circumvent these mentalities without taking rest days, rest days are just one method of many. Personally I have found that taking rest days where I don’t look at running content, check my training log, and mostly hang out with non-runners, has been a great way for me to recharge and keep the relationship fun.
