It's interesting that the fastest split for a 10 m segment mentioned in this thread 0.78 seconds for 150 to 160 in Johnson's 200 record. That works out to 28.7 mph. I would have guessed that the fastest 10 m segment would have been in one of the 100 m races.

So you reckon Johnson accelerated from 11.6 m/s to 12.8 m/s after 150m?
Watch the video. He didn't.
I don't know where those splits came from, but I saw splits where the fastest split was given as .89. Much more believable than .78.
No, I don't reckon. I took Malmo's splits. If they were wrong, then I was wrong. But that's how you'd analyze them regardless.
in the 100m, athletes reach a faster top speed than in the 200m. nowhere can i find any documentation on mj's .78 10m split. greene has split .82 for 10m several times and i would like to see gatlins 10m splits from yesterday.
bump
.78 is very hard to believe for a 10m split. 7.80 100m pace. I don't think so.
I agree, those splits (that malmo posted)are surely not right.

Those aren't "Malmo's Splits". They came from the annotated link.
http://tinyurl.com/hwy8cTable 6: Estimated times (sec) for Johnson, for distances over 100 meters.
100 110 120 130 140 150 160 170 180 190 200 Johnson 10.12 11.10 12.09 13.06 13.97 14.83 15.61 16.40 17.26 18.23 19.32
Someone didn't estimate very well.
Yes I know that those aren't malmo's splits, but all the same, either he was dumb enough to believe them, or he didn't check them, thus making him appear dumb enough to believe them.
This may have been over analyzed just a bit.
The 100m yields the fastest average mph.
Throw out Gatlin's 100m time and Johnson's 200m and the next group of 100m times are all less than double the next group of 200m times.
Powell's 9.77 X 2 = 19.54 is faster than Fredericks 19.66
and so on
Michael Johnson's record is just ridiculous and distorts all analysis of the sport.

Well, are you suggesting that MJ was some kind of genetic outlier?... that he was blessed with the uniquely perfect mix of slow and fast twitch muscles and all other physical traits that made him the perfect 200M runner?
Because I think the thing that separated MJ from all others was his incredible form. I just remember how smooth he looked- his torso and head barely straying from the line of forward movement, despite the fury with which his legs and arms pumped. He made it look effortless- yet, I think that MJ's technique can and will be replicated by others.
