I follow a couple ultrarunners on IG and seeing their pre-race gear spreads was nauseating. I did a rough tally on one post and it came out to approximately $3.5k of stuff -- over $1k just in shoes!!. Add in flights, lodging, rental van, food, etc. and it's probably a $6-7k+ event. And that's valuing his PTO and 3 crew members' time at $0.
Really makes me appreciate road 5ks and the local trail 50k that costs $70 to enter.
Don't even think about checking into a triathlon gear spread for a race like Kona Ironman if this nauseates you. For $2,000 on a per mile basis, this seems reasonable comparatively

Overall Update:
Harry Subertas 4:05:45
Pau Rius +13mins
Jack Scott +15mins
Dan Green +21mins
Courtney Dauwalter +25minsVersteeg and Joliffe lurking around top 10 as well. Sort of shocking how good the coverage is.
Joliffe about 57 minutes behind the leader Harry now.
Just heard Harry is about 1 hour ahead of last years pace through the race thus far.
Dan Green is a few spots away from making it off the waitlist for western states. It'll be interesting to see how he does at states after Cocodona.
I'm in Clarkdale on the path of this race. It is entertaining to see them drifting through town over the course of a day or more. Lots of them are staying in my Airbnbs. Not a lot of actual running going on.
Leader board after 7 hours
Harry Subertas
Jack Scott
Dan Green
Pau Rius
Ryan Sandes
..Pau supposedly took a while at 50k aid station, lost a couple spots trying to accumulate gear from randos since his drop bag was missing.
Course is experincing steady rain now.
Leader board at 10.5 hours
1) Harry Subertas
2) Courtney Dewaulter
3) Ryan Sandes
4) Dan Green
5) Jack Scott
6) Rachel Entrekin
7) Pau Rius
Does USADA test the top 10 at Cocodona?

Courtney passed Harry recent for 1st
Harry 2nd
Dan looking strong in 3rd
Ryan Sandes chugging in 4th
Pau Ruis looking good in 5th
Rachel E in 6th overall!
Jack Scott just came into an aid station with a badly pulled hammy in 7th
Micheal versteeg in 8th
Michael Greer 9th

No. They also don’t test mega doping influencers running 2:30 in jeans at Boston.
How do we know Courtney Dauwalter is not blasting EPO?

They do test the top ten at western states and utmb. While out of competition testing isn't there yet. I do know there's an union of pro trail runners who are trying to get more testing done in the sport.
19 hrs 33 min into the race
Dan Green 28 yrs old from Huntington, West Virginia is leading at mile 103, having passed Courtney
Courtney Dauwalter mile 102 in 2nd
Ryan Sandes 43 yrs old South African legend in 3rd mile 100
Then Rachel, Michael Versteed, hot on trail 5 miles back from leader
Local Sunrise time in 4 hrs 33 min
Only 150 more miles to go
Changes in the leaders on Day 2
Dan Green out front in mile 118
Ryan Sandes chasing at mile 113 in 2nd
New female leader Rachel Entrekin in 3rd mile 113
Several people at mile 108 aid station, Cody Poskin and DJ Fox who both climbed the leaderboard and Courtney Dauwalter who fell asleep.
Coming into 108 aid station and rounding top ten are Edher Ramirez, Michael Greer, Harry
...eyes on Edher...
Fast behind are more contenders Max Jolliffe, Jesse Haynes, Finn Melanson, Michael Mcknight, Lindsey Dwyer
From here I think the runners who can run well until the next day break will podium.
Weather looks like light rain and showers forecasted.
Michael Versteeg in 4th
Pumped that Versteeg is doing so well. What a legend! Interesting that Courtney has fallen off a bit after leading outright yesterday evening...went out too hot maybe? Fascinating race overall!
I don’t think you can sleep at all on the men’s side and still win the race. Courtney, if she didn’t dnf, can still win it for the women’s easily.
A good sleep strategy is to skip sleep night one and by night two start sleeping when it comes but only sleep enough to get REM and have someone wake you up after 5 to 40 minutes.
