I can only assume Lyles thought this would help him in 4x4 but he’ll have to run a lot more 400s to get on a 4x4 team in future
I doubt that. Unless he's utterly delusional (past the healthy athlete level of delusion) he knows that there are 10+ 400m runners better than him in the USA. His best bet to be on any 4x4 is to win the 100 and 200 and then leverage his personality and relay politics, because if he's on the relay more people will watch it. There is nothing he can do in terms of running to justify his inclusion.

He is not going to be on any 4x4 until he runs a 44 low. The US men don’t have that luxury, Botswana and GB are not far behind. The US women can truly put whoever on the 4x4 relay (within reason) and still win Gold, but the men can’t afford to do that.
1.Knighton looked absolutely awful in the 400.I know he ran the 100 leg earlier in the day, but he looked out of it after the first 150 or so.
2. I always wondered why Kerley gave up on the 400 so quickly. I didn't think he would be as good as he has been at the 100/200 overall, but feel he still could be our #1 400 runner yearly. At worst he's one of our three best and wouldn't have to compete with Lyles, Coleman, Kungfu Kenny, Knighton, and Lindsey yearly. Obviously he has held his own, but seems like the 400 would be easier and he would still have the 200.
A 4x4 with him Kerley, Benjamin, a healthy Norman, and Hall could take down the WR.

the 100 is easier, gets more glory, and most likely more $$
and kerley should probably be on the 4x4 anyway. when he's really primed for the 100 and 200 during world championships, there's no doubt he's worth a 43.5 split.

2 reasons:
1. money
2. ankle couldn’t hold up to the turns. that’s the primary reason why actually lol. it was a decision he made mid 2020 after a few years of ankle issues. felt like he wouldn’t hold up to 3 rounds of the 400.
