I agree with almost everything you're saying. What is the real need for this meeting - to make himself feel better about the state of his affairs? But especially to then make it public - some kind of odd sympathy casting? You know "hey everyone this is what I'm up against and why I gave up and barely broke 1.51 in a recent pro 800m race?"
I'd love to explain it but I can't. I think "Josh Kerr the brand" is this massive and wildly inflated figment of his own imagination.
