Tesla is a very volatile stock. Thus you can easily pick and choose time periods to support various arguments. For example, you can pick a recent low and say it is up 50% in the past year, or pick a recent high and say it is down 36% this year. Junior investment bankers learn in their first week on the job to select the time period for the stock price graph on page 3 of the pitch deck to fit whatever story the managing director is pitching to the client.
But the real issue to me with the stock is that it is about $275 today. You could have bought the stock for $275 in January 2021. It has bounced higher and lower since then, but it cannot seem to sustain any real value creation. By comparison the S&P 500 index is up nearly 50% during that time period.
This points to some potentially significant underlying problems at the company . The EV market is much more competitive than it was a few years ago and rivals have eroded Tesla's quality and price advantage. Musk is dividing his time on many, many projects -- if he is the key driver behind the company's performance, than it shouldn't perform as well while he focuses on X, SpaceEx, DOGE, etc. And of course there are the very recent problems related to a potential alienation of the prime buyers of EVs due to Musk's "in your face" political stances.
Tesla still has some great assets and potential -- the market obviously thinks it can still do a lot of stuff or else the stock wouldn't even be at $275. But there are issues there, and Musk would be wise to focus on addressing them and not creating new ones. That is certainly what the Tesla shareholders want.
