3, including Jakob. But, if we just look at the 1500m, Kerr has a metric that is more impressive than Jakob, at the highest level of sport which is the Olympics.
If everybody had the opportunity to pick between a gold versus both a silver and a bronze, everybody would pick the gold. Don’t delude yourself. It’s not a good look.
Everyone would also pick a medal over no medal lol

Kerr has only 2 senior gold medals in his career, one of them was the 3000m indoor gold in 2024.
Jakob just won the 2025 3000m indoor gold.
What is the point of this thread? Jakob is the greatest (track, distance) runner of his generation. Kerr, while one of the truly exceptional runners of the past few years, is not. Or course, Kerr is one of the few runners good enough to be a true rival for Jakob, especially in tactical 1500m races, so any time they step on the line together is bound to be good viewing.
Does anyone on this website actually disagree with any of this? If not, why all the threads comparing them? If Letsrun had existed in the 90s, would there have been a million threads discussing how Geb was (slightly, but decisively) better than Kiptanui or Tergat?
Kerr is one of nine men to win two medals over the event at the Olympic’s. Jakob’s one Olympic Gold has already been done by 30 other runners. Josh Kerr is more impressive.
Jak joins Nurmi and El G as the last two guys and only ever to win Olympic gold in 1500 and 5000.
Kerr joins Lagat and Willis as last two guys to win multiple medals in 1500 without ever winning.
With all due to respect to Lagat and Willis, Nurmi and El G are names Id rather be on list with
I would put Jakob in a different, lower class than El G and Nurmi. El G and Nurmi won their 1500 and 5000 golds in the same Games. Jakob won his in different ones. Jakob's accomplishment is more on the level of Lagat's 1500/5000 gold from Worlds. Still impressive, but rated lower
I know which one I think has had the better career so far...
Add another WC gold to the tally. Again - it’s not even a question between the two: JI is the dominant runner of his generation when it comes to titles and medals. And he’s done what Farrah never did by also chasing times and setting records.
People may accuse him of being a time trial merchant - but the major difference between Jakob and his rivals (Kerr, Hocker, Nuguse etc) is he shows up. He races more than any of them and always competes at Worlds, DL, Europeans and cross country.

Why would winning both golds in different games be any less impressive than doing it in two different games?

What is that metric? It cant be PR. It cant be an olympic gold medal.
One of the main reasons jakob is so diverse and dominant on the track is because he actually participates and competes in cross country as well. Something American pros really dont do after college. Xc gives him a hill-based strength arsenal in his stride that others can't match. Sure, his aerobics are great. But his legs have encountered way more technical surface hardships than those who dont do xc.
Agree, that one time a year Jakob runs cross really ups his game.

Jakob left Paris with a gold medal. Happy to remind you.

Always the excuses. The 5k doesn't change the fact he got his a*se kicked in his main event. None of those who beat him would give sh*t about the 5k. They weren't racing it. He might as well also be the world tiddlywinks champion for all the difference it makes to the Olympic 1500 outcome.

You were comparing him to Kerr. How many Olympic gold medals does Kerr have? Lol
