Yasso 800s kinda work as a predictor mostly by coincidence. It's basically just doing 800 reps at 5k pace, and it gives kind of a ceiling of your marathon performance (ie if you can't do 800s in 2:30 with 2:30 rest, you're probably not gonna be able to go sub-2:30 for a marathon, but it doesn't indicate you're in shape for that on its own if you can do that)
It kinda works because the number of 800s in a marathon (52.4) divided by 60 (mins/hour) =0.87333, which is roughly the ratio between 5k pace and marathon pace for most people (eg 5:20/mi 5k pace to a 2:40 marathon at 6:06/mi). A better predictor would probably just be running a 5k and chucking that into a VDOT calculator.
