I don’t know if you’re just being disingenuous or if you genuinely don’t know about specific training to peak for 1500m vs half marathon. Either way, it’s a bit strange. I feel like you should know better.
Specific training won't enable him to excel at events that he isn't suited to. Cheptegei has also just shown his likely limitations.

He doesn’t have it. Gault is right, Bekele and Geb with no supershoes spanked his ass with faster debut times and wins the race. Positive split is a bad sign his body is not suited for this event. Time to go to the mountain running scene and join Kilian Jornet
Are you saying that Geb won his marathon debut? He didn't. He was 3rd behind Khannouchi and Tergat.
You're right, Khannouchi won that race in a new world record time, with Tergat finishing just 10 seconds behind. But "Gone case" is correct in that Bekele and Geb showed greater aptitude for the marathon in their initial attempts than what we've seen from Cheptegei.
Geb: 2:06:35 to finish 3rd in London - that mark was only 57 seconds slower than the world record, and it put him 6th on the all-time list at that time
Bekele: 2:05:04 to finish 1st in Paris - that mark was 1:41 slower than the world record, and it put him tied for 27th on the all-time list at that time
Cheptegei (second marathon): 2:05:59 to finish 9th in Tokyo, more than 2:30 behind the winner - that mark is 5:24 slower than the world record, and it puts him tied for 218th on the all-time marathon list today
Give Cheptegei credit for improving on his debut, but he has a much longer way to go to becoming one of the world's best marathoners than his 5K-10K world-record-holding predecessors did when they made their debuts.
2:06 is a not a bad time, but finishing 9th is. And getting beaten by 8 unknow runners makes it even worse.
He’s looking like Mo Farah 2.0 at this. What we don’t know is his mileage. Last time out he was doing like 80-85 mpw which just won’t cut it. But if he was up to 120 mpw and still attaining this it might just not be for him.
You don't think it fair to compare Cheptegei's effort with a runner who says he wants the marathon record (and all the others)?
I think it would a bit more mentally sound to compare his effort with other marathon efforts, or other runners that have transitioned from track to the marathon.

Armstronglivs and "mentally sound" shouldn't be mentioned together in the same sentence.

I could see the mileage jump taking another year to acclimate to. but still, seems like being top 3 or top 5 level is not in the cards for him. Maybe he can work his way down to 2:03xx

I’m the DeepMind of distance sport. I have it all in the back of my head. I knew all these statistics in a quasi dream like state you call subconscious DeepMind—reference to mountain view California alphabet inc Google and made the correct gut instinct decision that cheptegei is poorer compared to bekele and geb. Anyone wants to download my beautiful mind via neuralink let Musk know.
fwiw, i also think Farah is maybe a little underrated for the marathon. He got into it a little too late, but he looked very good for a couple years.
Won Chicago, beating Geremew who would run 2:02 in his next marathon. Also beat 2:03 guys, Tola and Abdi at London in 2019.
He was legitimately considered top 3 in the world for at least a moment, a level that Cheptegei is not likely to achieve.
You should quit your pandering of Farah. He is dirty and would never have achieved even his underwhelming results without AlSal sauces. Cheptegei at least is not a clear cut doper like Hocker yet although I believe he dopes strategically because he always mysteriously wins big champs against the run of form book. Kiplimo may be doing the same too to run 56:42. But it’s all very deceptive as these guys make you think they didn’t come out of nowhere so they easily deceive you when they take drugs to run fast or win because you expected it anyway
I wish I could run a 2:05 marathon and people consider it a bad day. I remember when 2:05 would've been a world record. We're just spoiled now with all the sub 2:03 marathon times we forget that the average joe can't even run a quarter mile at a 5 min mile pace, let alone run 4:40 miles for 26 miles.

110 is enough to do good for his level. He could be a sisay lemma who improves a decade after doing the sport running 2:01 but it’s unlikely because his pathway needs to follow closely with bekele and geb as they all did track first before transitioning. Lemma never did track. Maybe he needs 170 to run 2:02? Still unlikely as his run technique is bad for the marathon.

You are on the wrong thread. Cheptegei is a world record holder I remind you at 5 and 10. And he is wearing advanced shoes and drinking advanced Maurten hydrogel. And he is 28/29, not 35, 36, 37, or 39. He is professional supposedly, and has the best environment at altitude in Uganda to train.
He barely threatened the 2:06 barrier and positive splitted. At least do a negative split for goodness sake. Even Gault knows that a negative split would have acquitted Cheptegei even in a loss. But he was expected to win too.

You are gullible coach. I remind you again bekele was 42 when he ran 2:04:15 even splitting finishing strong like a young stud. Cheptegei is almost half his bloody age and struggles to barely break 2:06 and positive splitted? What world are you living in? Cheptegei is done in this event. If he will be good he will be good already at the first outing debut like Sifan Hassan and Kelvin Kiptum.
