Does your state HS have javelin?

No javelin in Ohio.

Tennesse has the decathlon but not the javelin. They substitute the triple jump for the javelin in HS competition.

Arizona does not right now, but I've heard they're adding it soon.

When I was in HS in Vermont from 91-95, Vermont had Javelin where we used the real thing.

Wisconsin = no

Virginia does not have javelin, and hasn't for a while.

New York must have changed its law. When I was in Connecticut, we had one meet against a New York school and we left our javelin guys home.

Not after that unfortunate accident.

In the eighties a kid was hit by the jav (it wasn't fatal but was pretty nasty (this happened twice in the space of a couple of years), hence the rule.

That's interesting; is that for the regular jav or turbo jav? I coach in Iowa, and I've been at a couple of meeting where there's been some talk about whether the turbo jav would be a safe addition to the event list, but it hasn't gone beyond the talking stage. I'd never heard of the jav being an option in IL.

I would think that all High schools should offer the jav...with the rubber tip. The combination of dumb kids and un-qualified coaches make for a dangerous situation. What is the disadvantage to the rubber tip???

CT has the jav and at most meets I go to it's an accident waiting to happen.

In 30 years of coaching boys and girls I've had three minor incidents that could have been prevented. NONE with the girls team. We have had far more serious injuries with the hurdles.

Rubber tip javelins have very unpredictable bounces. The bottom line is - do not have any athletes in the danger zone. Do not let athletes practice unattended. Pretty simple rules but because some coaches don't make athletes adhere to them we have to risk a ban.

Turbo jav? Lets just throw nerf balls instead of shot puts. And get those dangerous spikes out of shoes.

Unless they changed the rule in the last couple of days, Virginia does not have the javelin.

Turbo jav. This should be safe. The regular would take some teaching to be safe. As a college coach, I was hoping I would see it at meets. It's the meet directors option I believe. As a college coach, I am interested in athletes who can throw javelin.
