So typically, a US High School Senior enters their Senior year of high school at age 17, and then will turn 18 sometime during the school months or later that summer before entering their Freshman year of college at 18. Hedengren just happened to have a birthday that fell in a very early month of the school months.

Now there have been some other notable high school runners in recent years that are age 19, which is quite atypical in the US school system, but some proponents argue that the parents sometime hold their kid back in order for them to get a leg up on development against their contemporary class-mates.

You were in the incorrect grade. Your parents made a huge mistake and they needed a waiver to put you in the wrong grade.
Whether or not my mother later ever second-guess her decision to advance me early, she said she did it because I was bored at the time (I had two older siblings that may have helped with cognitive development…)
The stupid age/grade argument is completely ridiculous and overplayed. So ridiculous. Whether she’s 17 or 18 years old, it doesn’t take away from how completely insane this performance is. She’s a completely normal age for a high school senior
