Training camp seems to have gone well for Nillessen - 7:37 NR win. I wonder if Laros is opening the season in Lievin?
Nordas not amazing, he did run far more aggressively than I'm used to seeing tho and still closed okay
Yes, I think Nillessen is the big story. Nordas, I mean on paper should be able to run in the range of a George Mills at 3,000. Obviously not expecting 7:27.9 every time as that was outstanding but a low-7:30s certainly feels like something we should see. Could tell that wasn't going to happen when Akbache gapped him at 7:30+ pace early. He can always close decently, but the second placer Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang while a perfectly fine athlete (who won't sniff a Kenyan team) should not be in front of him and matching his kick in a 3K.

Hold on, did Niilessen go from 8:13 to 7:37?
Technically yes, his indoor PB dated from February 2023. Worth noting he ran 8:05 outdoors in a win at age 19 in June of 2022.
He has progressed heavily since 2022 1:50/3:44/8:05, 2023 1:47.3/3:37, 2024 3:30.75 and now this 7:37. Bear in mind he just turned 22 a month ago, and he was competing mostly domestically in smaller Dutch meets or national competitions at their bigger meets until ISTAF Berlin 2023 where he ran that 1500m time. It is like an Ethan Strand progression I guess you could think. This time he trains with Laros and now Cheruiyot under Lewandowski.

I think we may be under appreciating mills’ 7:27. In a low key meet almost solo. Not sure many except perhaps at milrose will be in that range
It was an awesome run. Of guys running indoors yes Jakob Kerr, Nuguse, Fisher, Hocker (maybe) feel like only guys at that level. Some Ethiopians like Mehary could run soon unsure his plans.

Weird that he did not at Millrose instead. Maybe he simply wanted to avoid the travelling and he is not focusing on indoor, but simply happens to be in great shape.
Here is a story on Nordas' race with some comments from the Norwegian press. It doesn't sounds like he's done much speedwork (yes that's a cliche). Do we think he can get to 13:01 in a couple of weeks...I'm skeptical:
“Not such a bad body after 7:39 at 3000m the day before; mediocre races don't keep you awake at night 😅 -A modest position, and definitely not a spectacular time, but actually quite satisfied with the time/performance based on the entry. People are people, and a Norwegian record is now a Norwegian record, so dig in after races like this, there will be a long way between flashes of light. It's a start in any case, and it could, after all, be far worse. Looking bright at 5000m in Boston and European Championships indoors”
I'm beginning to think we are all crazy for being so obsessed with track and field. We need some mental health ASAP (myself included and definitely you).
