Following this idea, could it be possible that if this is true that it means that only in the sense of raw talent are men significantly faster, but with enough training the different is much less?
Huh. No downvotes, and multiple upvotes. I'll put this into perspective a bit more and lets see how much that changes. I bet there will not be a single upvote, and many downvotes. The only changes I made are changing men to trans women (in the eyes of many, trans women are men)

Not tryna be that guy and not trying to be those d*cks that are always sh*tting on you for asking questions about trans people in sports and trying to find your own category to compete fairly - but people were upvoting your first comment because they are agreeing that in some cases average men will naturally be faster without training compared to a woman at the same bell curve percentile, like say, 3:00 for 800m for a untrained guy versus 3:45 for 800m for an untrained woman or something, I dunno exactly. This gap shrinks to 1:41 and 1:53 at world-class levels. The difference is much less, but it is still insane and unfair to compete together. It's 12 whole seconds in an 800m. And this is the smallest gap there is. So yes, men may have more natural talent and the gap may shrink to "much less" with training, but it is still in insurmountable gap and it is absolutely not fair for men and women to compete. And taking your own words I guess changing men into trans women, it's still unfair if they have the same "raw talent" you describe.
But the hazy part is more that what if you managed to transition away all of the physiological advantages of being male would it still be unfair for trans women to compete with the women... well in most cases once hormone blockers are done or replacement therapy or anything extensive the trans women are damaged to the point of being unable to compete and it's not a good look. Otherwise it doesn't seem to do enough and they're still way leagues better than most women. So it's a hard debate.
Someone pull the data. Sure, we have scoring tables. But I'd like to see these raw numbers per event. Would help contextualize the women's 2:09 marathon vs. the women's WR in the 1500m or 400m, etc.
Bonus points for normalizing the data--e.g., only counting performances in meets of a certain minimum standard, accounting for number of attempts, etc.
I'm too lazy to do it.
High school boys run under Florence Griffith Joyner’s 100/200 world records each and every year. And those are the most blatantly obvious drug records in all of sports, in my opinion.
I’d say the women’s 400 is the most obvious drugged record given how far from it competitors are today
It's an interesting analysis, but it doesn't tell us as much about the difference between men and women as looking at percentiles. It's possible (although very unlikely) that one day we could have a super freak woman athlete that is faster than all men ... but a singular performance from one person wouldn't tell us anything about differences in the male and female populations. Ultimately, we need to look at distributions.
Yes men are far superior to women when it comes to anything physical, this is news?
Ha ha. I had a 6th grade student of mine say that once. A 6th grade student! Be real. Maybe 1% of men are better than the best women. So it’s an overlapping bell curve really. The best women are astounding. And best men as well. I had the world records for HJ for both men and women up on the wall and the LJ on the floor. Added in best jumps by former students as well when they went to HS. But some men are better than all women, but not men over women as a whole.

Not even close to 1% of male runners can break 14 min for a 5k for example. In fact very few of the top highschool boys, nationally, can even do that. Its got to be closer to 0.1% or even 0.001% or even lower, but the point about overlapping bell curves more generally is likely true.
Men are far superior to women. My 17 year old son ran faster than several world records last year and he wasn't the top runner in our average state. Let that sink in. He is a nobody but he could have shown up at the Olympics and won several gold medals and broke world records. So he is faster than any woman who has ever lived. How many billion women is that?

OP is just interested in the gap in the different events and whether it shows something.
Comparing absolute numbers of people across events doesn't really work, as someone said it's about percentages. The sample size is different for men and women and in each event.
Can your son run 2:09? He is unlikely to do it in his career, despite a good amount of talent.
It is ran by almost no men globally despite massive participation rates in marathons, so no matter the stats say, for me thats the toughest time for a decently talented guy to break.

Yes... your son is actually proof that any random dude can get off his couch and train for a couple of weeks and break the women's world records... it is that easy.

Well, I'm a total wuss and I'm still stronger than almost all the women I know. I think there is one who is stronger than I am in the upper body, but that's it. All the rest, not a chance. So yeah, men are far superior to women in physical strength. The fact that the curves overlap doesn't change that.
