This thread title is one of the all time greats. The video was great as well. I can't say I have ever had that question but I love that I have an answer.
I’ll run 5 miles (on dirt roads) with my golden doodle and will sometimes close the last 2 miles in sub 6:30. Has to be cold out but not very surprising a dog that is probably better suited for distance running can run a 4:47 mile
My Australian shepherd ran a sub 3:40 off of raw talent. Weiner dogs are slow
I would think that quite a few dogs could break 4:00 with minimal training. A greyhound or whippet might even get close to 3:00.
Close to 3:00 ?!
They would break 2:00 and still be the happiest dogs in the world.
My Doberman, which is also a European doberman (way heavier than his American counterpart) used to follow me on my bike for 2 miles at 3:00/mile pace and he wasnt even exhausted afterwards.
Definitely not. The longest greyhound races are about 500m, and that's considered long distance. Most are between 200-300m. Ever tried to take a greyhound for a run? Mine looks like I'm abusing him after about 600m.
I think Georgie was being held back a little, to be honest. I'll bet he could go sub 4:40 right now. With proper training, who knows what he could achieve.

And let's note that the mile they ran wasn't flat. You could see from the background in some shots that they were definitely doing a little rolling.

Plus, Georgie was definitely not running the tangents.

A saluki is nearly as fast as a greyhound, and can run at top speed for at least 10 minutes. The Arabs use them to run down pronghorn antelopes.

Here are the track records from Crayford Greyhound track (a random track that popped up upon Google searching):
380m: Kingdom Club - 23.01 sec. (09/27/03) 380mH: Rossa Ranger 23.36 sec. (04/15/02) 540m: Sportsman 33.26 sec. (02/03/03) 540mH: Selby Ben 33.68 sec. (03/26/03) 714m: Centour Corker 44.74 sec. (03/03/03) 874m: Clonbrin Black 56.15 sec. (10/06/93) 1048m: Stansted Flyer 69.81 sec. (09/07/96)
So it looks like a lot of people on this thread are making incorrect assumptions/assertions about Greyhounds and dramatically underestimating how fast they are.
