That's a big part of why I say I'd only want Alberta. I think they'd be a purple state and their production relative to consumption is better than the rest of Canada from what I understand, so I'd be cool with them.

Canada is also bigger in area than the entire USA. So having 50% of your land mass in 1/51 of your federal structure is illogical. A better solution would be for each Canadian Province and Territory to become a State*. Therefore 13 new states, with probably 22 of the 26 new Senators being Democrat and 40 of the 50 or so new Reps being Democrat.
Makes granting statehood to Puerto Rico and D.C. trivial by comparison.
* If this happened then five of the sixth largest states by area would be ex-Canadian states

I don't think Trump knows about the separate provinces / territories. He's too stupid (you may recall "Trump's Map of Africa"?). But this is probably a good way to do it.
