Hi Letsrun,
Developing a possible stress reaction in the tibia, most likely out 2-3 months of running
Planning on biking or using the arc trainer 90 minutes a day in about zone 3 HR (140-160). Doing this 5 days a week of just a steady season, and incorporating 2 fartleks or tempos a week on the arc trainer at a higher HR zone around 175 for the workout portion
For example:
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday - 90 min bike
Wednesday - 30 minute bike, 2 minutes on, 2 minutes off for 30 minutes on the Arc trainer, 30 minute bike
Thursday, Friday - 90 minute bike
Saturday - 30 minute bike, 6 minutes on, 3 minutes off for 30 minutes on the Arc trainer, 30 minute bike.
I have had my fair share of injuries and never been fully healthy, never been able to do over 60 miles a week consistently, often have to throw in a 30-40 minute bike ride after a 7 mile run to get some aerobic fitness. And curious to how much the cross training actually helps build a base
I think if you actually keep your hr at 140 - 160 for 90 minutes a day 5 days a week it'll probably help a lot with fitness. However, as someone who's done a ton of biking due to a persistent injury, I find it extremely hard to keep my HR up on the bike. I don't know if I have the mental strength to cycle in Zone 3 for 90 minutes a day 5 days per week. Biking outside it's hard to keep your HR up at times because you're dealing with route-finding and traffic and hills. Inside, it's mind-numbingly boring.
Personally, I think there are probably better options. Isn't elliptical or water running a better match with actual running?
