But he couldn’t quite catch the age 7 boy who finished one spot ahead of him in 21:05. A good reminder for him not to get too far behind.
I wonder if that kid knew an Olympic Champion was right behind him. Hocker's not exactly your average hobby jogger.
I met Hocker at Millrose this year while watching the Wanamaker Mile. First congratulated him on a great performance in the 2 mile and asked how it was to be in a WR race with Kerr. Then asked him if he thought Yared would break the WR in the indoor mile. He said "I hope not!" since less competition makes it easier to make the Oly team. Looking back on what Hocker did this year between running Oly trials and becoming Oly champion, it's surreal.
The thing that struck me most was how humble Hocker was. That's how he won 1500 gold. By ignoring all the nonsense and rivalries, and just competing and reaping the rewards of all the hard work he put in. Back then I didn't expect him to be the Oly Champ, but it makes all the more sense even just having met him for 3 minutes. Kerr and Ingebrigtsen were too focused on each other. Hocker (and to a slightly lesser extent Nuguse) were focused on winning.
With his work ethic, it won't surprise me to see Hocker surpass Ingebrigtsen in the 1500 in 2025 or 2026. I think 3:26.x is coming for Hocker, and perhaps even 3:25.x (though I still give Jakob the edge for getting El G's WR, but don't count Hocker out for breaking a newly established WR by Jakob). As for the mile, that's Nuguse's race in my opinion (behind Jakob) while Hocker is the better American at 1500.
