We had a few people try double threshold. Started with 5k of threshold in the morning and 7km in the evening. I didn't have to ask them to do it they wanted to. We have upped the volume after nailing down the effort. Your fastest kid won't be the same kid for long if a few others do double threshold. That might change his mind.
This guy is our best hope for top team results and he’s not being a good team player with our DT program. Any recommendations on how to make him listen?
I don't know why I didn't ask this when the thread just started, but why do you think it's a good idea to get your fastest guy to stop what he's doing and train like people who are slower than he is? I'd NEVER do that if I was the fastest runner. The way to make him listen is to get at least a couple of those slower runners faster than he is.
Double threshold is high risk, moderate reward in my opinion.
It can work, but you really need to know your body and control your intensity. double threshold works if you have years of experience gauging your effort with a combination of speed/time/lactate/heart rate/feeling.
Everyone always wants a numeric definition of threshold, but in my opinion, threshold is a feeling. Its a feeling that you got a good workout in, but didn't bury yourself and can knock off some good mileage the next day.
Indeed, many athletes have tried double threshold and gotten worse. This particular Norwegian stopped doing double threshold and noticed big improvements. The double threshold trend, didn't work for his n=1 experience.

cookie cutter is BS. one a day hard fine. double threshold, i would say is more for world class. and a certain type of individual.
great athletes think for themselves
and follow the coach he trusts
Snell would ditch some long stuff of Lydiard and substitute speed, once in a while
Walker had full confidence in his coach Jelly, but after injured and operation, evolved the 70 minute hard run as a mainstay.
in the OG, the athletes go by the outline of the coach's plan but the great ones think on the fly what to do, make the move, when the plan goes out the window.
if you, coach are hell bent on your rigid military ways, focus on your number 2 and number 3 guys, and if they beat your number 1 guy, he might come back and say, hey coach, how about those double thresholds.
at the end of the day, the number 1 guy may be seen as challenging his authority, his ego is hurt, and this coach may be a narcissist, or maybe not.
a narc coach will put his authority ahead of the athlete, covert narcs will make the athlete look bad, bad mouth, so he keeps control, and diminishes the athlete.
if i were the athlete, i would quit. without any further info.

Tell the guy to do the first workout followed by the second one minus some of the 20-25% of the reps. I do 60 min worth of work on a double T day, I can only do 45min in a session with the same effort so that I'm not wasted.
Seems like you're about to ruin a good thing. Good coaches knows not everyone responds the same to same training as everyone else. Nothing wrong with him doing what works for him and he could be a team player simply by cheering you on or timing others on the workouts but stop trying to "fix" him. If he doesn't believe or trust a new training plan mentally then it's not going to work for him.
