This one aged well. I predicted Knoxville Catholic to take second, because St Albans really never raced against any top teams in the nation or region. But they went to NXR and showed what they’re made of. I don’t believe they were at NXR last year. DC is on the map now.
Another amazing thing is how close they were to Belen Jesuit. 40 points behind. Usually we don’t see it as close, but against a team like this, it’s really good. No one came this close to Belen Jesuit in big meets all year.
as far as NC goes Marvin Ridge had an awful day. Every one of their top 7 had run faster on this same course earlier in the year and just didnt have it today. But on the positive note for NC the Cardinal Gibbons girls got the job done despite a mediocre race from their #3 and #4 and in a big surprise Broughton got 3rd on the mens side. Way back of the top 2 but still, they lost to Marvin Ridge convincingly at NC 4A states a few weeks ago and then convincingly beat them today. They return 5 of their top 6.
Brentwood has had a few boys teams qualify in the past (when Brodey Hasty was there) , and it’s great to see the girls team make it now.
Boys team wasn’t even in the championship race. Before the season started I thought they would maybe have some sort of a chance to qualify if they found a 5th runner which they did.
Fun fact: If 2 alums named who’s names are pronounced like Brody (Chapman and Hasty) were still eligible to compete for Brentwood, this team possibly would have made it to NXN
Belen loses all but their 1st and 2nd, St. Albans loses 1st, second, 3rd and 5th, Broughton only loses their 4th, Knoxville loses their 1st, 5th, and 6th, but have 2 freshman in their top 5 who should make big leaps forward. Marvin Ridge loses all but their 4th and 6th. I can´t really predict a winner for next year, Belen looks on paper like they should be out of it, but have shown that they can bounce back after major losses ( lost their top 2 and 5th last year), Broughton has an insane 22 second 1-6 split (removing the senior, 12 seconds counting him), and returns two sophomores, and Knoxville has two freshman and a sophomore in their returners. I think that the Southeast will earn an at-large bid, especially if Broughton and Knoxville can win races outside of their region, or if they can force Belen into 3rd. Knoxville is the only one that might struggle since they lose such a good low stick, but their 4th and 5th will probably make it up since they´re only freshman.

Just by looking at the NXR championship race, Knoxville Catholic looks to have a large 4-5 gap next year, but one of the 2 freshmen has a younger brother coming in next year.
Also, I would watch out for McCallie who is returning 5 guys from the championship race. They return four sub-16 guys, a 16:10, and another 16:30 from the open race. All will be seniors. Only one freshman or sophomore on the team ran under 19 minutes so this might be the last dance for the program, but someone in the TN thread posted that they recruit

I´m only seeing that McCallie put 2 sub 16, are the rest of the times from the open race or pr´s from other courses? if they´re from the open then they could be contenders next year for sure. Boys results next year will probably shape up like the girls from this year, so everything is very tentative for now.

For Broughton the 22 seconds is for their 1-5 including the senior. Milesplit mistakenly has another runner Chase Liming as running for Broughton which is not the case. They need to find a 5th for next year because their 6th and 7th (both juniors) are pretty consistently a minute back of their top 5. Either someone needs to step up or they need a freshman to come in. There is a strong youth running scene in the area that always has good kids entering high school but i have no idea if any are going to Broughton.

Some of their sub-16s were run not at NXR. But at Randolph. Is Randolph a fast course?

Look at the dash for doobie results, Liming goes to Broughton now. Milesplit was incorrect when they put him as a scorer for Broughton, but they got it wrong because he goes there and is on the team, but raced unattatched. They probably didn´t want to plug in a transfer at the end of the season just for NXR/had already entered. He didn´t score for them, but will be there next year.

good to know. I just knew he was at Cary and was unattached in the official results. If he's transferring that does make me feel a lot better about them being a contender for the 2 AQ's next year.
I wouldn’t count out Belen Jesuit to qualify next year. Yes they are losing a lot of seniors but they return their top 2, and they won as a team in the rising stars race. Those freshmen and sophomores have room to step up. They did a great job reloading from the 2020 to the 2021 season
I feel like it would be more likely if a Marvin Ridge, Knoxville, or even McCallie had gotten 3rd, but since Broughton wasn´t even an honorable mention in the pre-race rankings, are we counting them out of it?
I don´t know, but I think that cross country times are pretty irrelevant just because of how different courses can be. I´m only using results from this race, Great American, and the Adidas XC challenge (because Knoxville didn´t go to GA) to think about this, and even on Wakemed, Great American was pretty slow, while Adidas and NXR were super fast. You can´t really just say a team has a bunch of sub 16´s on different courses and say they´re good. I think McCallie is a great program, but that´s not really a good metric.
That 5th has been running with their 4th most races, he just didn’t do well on the day. Definitely a team to look out for if they can get a consistent 5th.
