Serious question - I don't like pacers either, but if they have pacers, why do they even have to be runners? Couldn't they just have a bike or moto to pace them? Is it just to have a better sense of moderating effort for terrain (although pacers are more often on flat courses). The whole thing seems kind of dumb.
Marathons don't allow bikes or any other non-marathon runners on the course. A pacer registers to run the race like anyone else.
Pacers are idiotic. You’re supposed to be watching the best marathoners in the world, but you end up seeing some guys in referee outfits.
Just don't time the event. Both races were way too slow. Pacers would have stepped off. Isn't it all about Citius, Altius, Fortius? Not who has the best kick after staying at the back of the pack.
Marathons are far better with competitors racing each other opposed to watching pacing time trials. Watching Kipchoge run a special event designed for sub two goal was great but watching Kipchoge unchallenged in marathon races was less exciting. Marathons are so much better without pacers.
