I am a fan of the North American marathon runners and I find Young an enigma. Why wouldn't you run all out to win the trial? (I suppose Moore/Shorter deadheated at least in 72). Why wouldn't you run hard all the way to the line and try to break 2:08? Why (on his very good podcasts) during most every post race commentary does he regret letting the lead pack go too early? Having said that I think both Young and Mantz can break their PB's on the far from easy New York course if they have a good day.
Look for Tristin Colley to breakout and be top American woman!
Unique take but I actually think it has merit. She's built a good resume between 10k and 21k over the last few years and is ultra consistent. Wouldn't surprise me to see her rum a really strong race in New York.
I was thinking about how marathons have changed. Its not just shoes etc. I'm old enough to remember the 70's and 80's when NY was considered a legitimate course to try for a world record. Of course, it turned out it wasn't a legitimate course one year.
I agree. The American men and women seem to be falling further and further behind the world. Especially the men.
The women used to do well on the word stage, but now with others running 2:09-2:15 - the American women have stagnated.
If Western parents didn't give their daughters their first pair of high heel shoes before age five there'd be no difference between the power in African and Kaukasian achilles tendons.
Not even trans women are able to keep up, because of the high heel culture thing! ;-)
Bold prediction: Clayton Young is first American (ok), podiums (oh, wow), and PRs (wut!). Something in the low 2:07 range.
He's coming in fresh and healthy and didn’t race his long runs in the build up. I think the conditions give him the edge over Connor, and then a couple front runners (Chebet, Korir, maybe even Tola) break along the way allowing him to crack top 3. He’s completely wound up, but is going to uncoil like a slinky in this one.

Speaking of disappointing American men apparently Klecker is running. Interesting though that you can’t find his name on the tracking list in the app. What name is he using to hide himself and why? You can run but you can’t hide 🤣
Would love to see Young and McClain be the top Americans and challenge for top 5 overall. I feel like anything can happen at this marathon. That New York feeling!
Weather is cool today, based on research it’s at the low end of optimal. a good day for fast times.
What research shows mid 50s (upper 50s for the mid packers) is "at the low end of optimal?"
I think everybody would have signed up for this weather when they sent in their applications, but I'm guessing most would have gladly taken 10*F cooler
