I have been following Rory’s journey on YouTube and was a fan of Hall’s back in his prime so I followed the situation closely when it happened — basically what you’re saying is the reason why Ryan stopped, him being aware of the fact that others are dependent on him to an extent while his interests are starting to splinter off from being a top level coach
he went on some podcast and laid everything out in full but basically he said he wanted to get back in the mode of being a full time “student” rather than balancing coaching, other interests and learning new things. Rory said on his YouTube many times that he was quite stunned/shocked - he got an abrupt email right after the Olympics where Ryan said he was done, but it’s clear there was no bad blood. I’m sure Rory felt “dumped” but I think both sides understand it’s better to move on if Ryan’s not 100% into it

I don’t care who you are or who the athlete is: ending your professional relationship with an Olympic athlete over an email isn’t professional. That’s a phone call that needs to be made. I get the timing can be bad with the Olympics—you may not want to offset your athlete’s game going into competition, but to drop news like that so suddenly over such a method is kinda not cool.

Imparting big information is weird. I feel that it is not a mistake to deliver the message in writing, so that a fairly thorough and nuanced message can be expressed. (Why he’s leaving coaching, how much he has enjoyed working with the athlete, his appreciating the opportunity the athlete gave him as a coach, etc.)
Best case scenario, I would hope that the person give the athlete a verbal heads up that a transition away from coaching is in the works. Just one or two days lead time, so that it is not a total bomb out of nowhere.
Like, I think big information needs to be a one-two punch. One: tell the person verbally that a change is coming (whether you are telling your boss you are going to be resigning in order to retire early, or telling your wife that you are going to be applying for a legal separation so that you can start a new chapter in life, or telling your athlete that you will not be coaching athletes anymore because you feel led to other pursuits), and THEN, express the thing fully and properly, in writing.
Makes sense. I think he needs to commit to something and stop jumping ship. Sounds a bit cliche, but I think a 9–5 job could perhaps do him some good, get him more organized, and give him more stress capacity. I can’t imagine his schedule as a coach was actually that overwhelming in itself, but more so rooted in him not being used to type of kind of grind and pressure. As a professional runner, he had a lot of down time. Grain of salt.

Homer, look around: this ain't no pro sport. Either get the agreement in writing or either party can end it at any point on a whim.
A shame that the hilarious post (post 3) got removed!
Wish we could click on a deleted post, i would love to reread it. It was just funny.
I totally get why psycho posts get moderated away, but it was not psycho. Just a harmless bit about: rory was “shocked” but y’know, he also saw it coming all along.
Oh well, I can’t recreate the magic. Whoever deleted that, just made the world a duller place,
the mods appear to be rookies trying their best.
i got my account banned for "life" with a spicy article with insider info.
to which i don't care, i mean the info isn't for pay, or accolades, just fun and sharing, so its letsrun party, and they can cry if they want to.
then my account was reinstated without me asking, but i never use it. i banned letsrun for "life" from the account.
anyway, i think you can email rojo about a good post, and if he gets say three requests to reinstate, i'm under the impression he may well reinstate the article.
letsrun was well advised to take a different route to the track and field news approach, where dictator Garry Hill ran the thing into the ground, moderating the thing to pablum.
meaning the trackandfield news lets a lot of spicy stuff go as well.
letsrun should buy track and fileld news if the thing comes up for sale,
