I coaches for a while and recruited all over. Visited lots of different high schools for practice. Here were some observations from different ends of the spectrum.
1. Wealthy school- suburbs of major southern city, state champs. They literally had a drop off line at 6:00am like it was kindergarten. Parents in their sports cars pulling up to the curb, letting the kids out one by one then picking them up again. The coach said it was more important to get the parents on board vs the kids. Said if the parents care they will get them up early, get them to practice, buy them shoes, make them run on the weekend, send them to camp etc. kids were along for the ride. 80-90 per gender
2. Poor school, Central Valley, came close to winning state. Maybe 15-20 kids per gender. They met at 8:00pm after the kids were done with work all summer. Did not see any parents. All the kids walked or rode a bike in some brought younger siblings they were in charge of. None had proper running gear (they were good though)
