I heard he even waved an American flag and ran in the outside lane during the whole second lap.
Check the commonwealth games records I am pretty sure a few years ago a runner came through sub 46 before slowing.
Of course Gray was known for very fast starts including the 600 meter world record in 1:12, before running like 32+ seconds over the next 200 meters.
I had a teammate once go 2:02 running, 25/35/27/35.
Took the lead at 200, fell back to last at 400, took the lead again at 600 and finished last.

I once raced Lagat in an 800 when he was at WSU, I thought he would hold a good pace so I tucked in behind him, for a 60sec first 400. (He was 59.5) He kicked in 48sec, I kicked in 51sec. That's the most negative I've ever run, I'm sure some 1:43 guys have done better though.

dude. 48? bullshit. Lagat is a 1.46 flat guy and you propose he ran a 1.48 with a 48 last lap??? One of the craziest and fastest finishes I have seen was European Cup Borzakovskiy v Schumann and off 58 they came home in 50 flat, and they were flying from the bell and rigging up the straight. I can tell you a 58 is at least the same for those guys with 45 second 400m pace as a 60 is for Lagat with probably 49 flat pace.

However, the fact that at least 2 people have missed it turned a kinda weak joke into a pretty damn funny one.
This is a guy who closed the last 800 in 1:46 in a 3:34 1500 with a 51 last lap. Also the same guy who closed a 12:5x 5k with a 51.

It was a 1:46.9 (so almost a 1:47) last 800 with a rolling start and almost total drafting. Just with the rolling start its more like a 1:47.5.
Lagat ran in several fast circuit races in Europe during his peak years over 800, and could manage no faster than 1:46.0.
Of course a 3:26 1500 guy should have no problems running at worst 1:44 for 800, but then EPO is an amazing drug for improving 1500 but not so much over 800. It also screws up the ability to predict 800 times based on 1500 times and vice versa.
