No he didn't. In practice he ran 4:55 pace around the block for 34 miles. He should be running 2:05.
You’re assuming he was targeting peaking for this race and not for NYC or not for next year. He ran over 100 miles the week of Chicago and he’s back doing speed work and 20 mile double days this week. I have to imagine he has a multi-year plan. Hopefully Nike or Addidas pick him up, better shoes could get him down to the AR
I'm not sure his training really focuses on "peaking". He's going to run a similar time to what he does on these epic long runs in training. Plus New York is not conducive for fast times. If he wanted to focus on a fast time, Chicago was the place. Now if he top American and Top 5 overall at NYC, I would respect that result more than what he did in Chicago, regardless of time.
I actually think it's relatable for 99.9% of humans that your performances will never be impressive if you compare them to others. You might be the best in your school, town, county, state... turns out you can be one of the best ever in your country and there's still a way to frame it that makes it look downright humiliating. Good for CJ, I think we all have suspicions about what's going on in pockets of the sport but it's not worth sucking the joy out of the accomplishments happening on a smaller level.

Lol. I highly doubt that is all part of his grand long term master plan: to train through Chicago in order to really kill it at another race. No. His high mileage pre and post chicago weeks is just how this guy rolls. He has Insane, nearly unprecedented durability and ability to recover. He's literally " built different. "

His endurance is very high. He may need to work on his 5/10 spped to be able to run appreciably faster. Though to counter my own statement BR "only" ran 13:45 or so and 28:0x, and ran 2:09:27(?). What CJ is doing is clearly working for HIM.

I don't know the specifics of his training because I only see the epic long runs. But I wonder if he integrated more threshold and faster paces into his training, and simply reduced the volume of his near-marathon pace runs, how that would work out for him.

Jfc this just shows the guy has mental issues...my God that is overtraing. If he could get some help, and do LESS, he'd run better. This is OCD to the max. If you're only running 1.5min or so faster for a marathon than you do in TRAINING...that is massive overtraining. His multi year plan is gonna be cracking mentally or physically (if not both).
I think he holds on for 2:06 if it's ~10-15 degrees cooler. It was a really solid run. Deserves more credit. I wonder what would happen if he backed off just a little.

No he was looking for strava kudos. I live near him and saw him kick a bichon frise that just happened to stray into his path. I saw dog walkers, buggy pushers and old people jumping out of the way of the maniac.

Isn't doing exactly this pretty much the exact point that Renato Canova makes about why the US guys with much faster PBs than CJ don't run 2:08?

No doubt he'd be way faster. He's a marathoner, but the only track workouts he does are like 6 x 800m or 12 x 400m, seemingly just for some turnover, then back to his 20 mile tempos. If he played more emphasis on longer workouts like 12 x 800m or 6 x 2k or whatever I think he'd be at least 2 minutes faster in his marathons

not really, no. Kenyans often do workouts of 30 x 1/1 or 20 x 2/2 or equivalent or 15k of longer track repeats. These are a big reason why they are as fast as they are. They aren't just doing long tempos like CJ is doing

for example, could he do 12 x 800 in 2:16 or so with a 2 minute rest at 5:20 pace (so, 600m rest). Some workouts like this would seem to be a lot more beneficial that just tempo after tempo after temp

and when they do those workouts, the rest is much faster than jogging back (sub-tempo pace)
