Since you describe it as "normal" where are all the others "carrying" (which would have been picked up by security, as this was) at Trump's (or Harris's) political rallies? Law enforcement are describing it as an attempt on Trump's life. The gun toter had no legitimate reason for being a walking arsenal in a political rally. But, as the report makes clear, he was yet another Republican. Trump has serious enemies - people who want him dead and are prepared to bring this about - on the same side of his aisle.

They haven't posed as Trump supporters. Their Republican affiliations were revealed in their lives well before their attempts to assassinate Trump. Nothing about them has suggested liberal or Democrat. It fits. They likely felt that he has in some way betrayed their faith in him and the Party. From Judas onwards, a disillusioned disciple easily becomes one who believes the leader must die.
It wasn’t much of an attempt. He was arrested about half a mile from the entrance to the rally, and there was no way he could have gotten in. He’s already out on a $5K bail.
An attempt is still an attempt - even it fails. But it was another Republican, so failure was predictable.
One guy is facing life in prison while the other will probably receive a suspended sentence. Not all attempts are created equal.
The sheriff has now claimed he was given bad info and that the suspect was not trying to kill Trump.

It was normal enough that this "assassination attempt"er was released within hours of his arrest.
To refer to this situation as an assassination attempt is assinine but it makes Trump feel good about himself I guess.
