The interviewer kind of asked this question but I'd like to know more about coming from an evangelical place like Liberty how he coaches people who are much more "diverse"
Probably because he doesn’t feel his religious views keep him from accepting as you put it “diverse” people. As much as the current politics want to persuade you otherwise- many Christian’s are accepting and loving to ALL people. As someone who was raised in the evangelical church I can assure you we are not all filled with hate and contempt for others that are not like us. Many groups in this country unfortunately are including some “Christian’s” but not all.
completely agree with you that many christians are quite tolerant of people who disagree with them and live lifestyles they may not agree with. But to be fair to the other poster, the kinds of people that go to Liberty aren't typically the tolerant kinds of christians.
I dont think its an unfair thought to have, Liberty has a deserved reputation in that sense. But i also think, to your point, that if Cornfield was some intolerant bigot i dont think Nico Young would have felt as comfortable coming out. I dont think it matters if he personally things homosexuality is a sin as long as he is tolerant and homosexual athletes feel comfortable in the program which Nico Young proves they can and do.
I've known Cornfield from the outside looking in since his high school running days in New York. His religion will not change anything at NAU, so it's ridiculous to even mention it. Do I think he will have the same success as Heins and Smith? Maybe, maybe not, but I respect that he should be the next in line for this job. After spending over a decade helping to build the program, he deserves a chance to succeed or fail.
Most likely the recruiting class will be dull and some might transfer. There is a huge difference between Mike Smith and Cornfield. It doesn’t take a genius to figure this out. NAU had a heck of a run.
Cornfield lives on these message boards and posts all the time. Hopefully he just focuses on the NAU current athletes staying happy. That’s his best chance at keeping NAU decent
He's got big shoes to fill and the competition has changed a lot with the new willingness and ability on the part of rival programs to fill their programs with mature East African talent that is already at or above the elite NCAA level before they step on campus. That, I believe, is a big part of why Mike Smith chose this time to leave, in addition to the graduation of Nico Young and the graduation of Drew Bosley next year, giving him a full group of home-grown pros.
There is no reason for anyone to run for NAU at this point with Mike Smith gone next year. It’s not like NAU is a money filled program or even a school with an ounce of academic respect. Mike Smith will try to give his respect to Cornfield for being a sidekick for so long by telling current athletes to stay. It’s the right thing and respectful thing to do. However, the athletes know it’s an uphill battle. I feel bad for anyone that came to NAU as a freshman or transferred this fall to run for Mike Smith and now they get stuck with his assistant. I agree you’ll see a dismal recruiting class and a few transfers out of NAU. The entire situation is strange and not good.

agree, NAU should disband the entire track and field team once Smith leaves. in fact, NAU should destroy the track at Lumberjack Stadium and forbid any future students from running, even hobby jogging punishable by death. all current track and field athletes to be banished from Flagstaff forever and their names can never be spoken.

I've been surprised with how constituently good UVA and Notre Dame are. They're nowhere near as bad as NAU but they're not great academically either. But they get a ton of top recruits.

I disagree Flagstaff is a great place to train and will always have pros. It’s 7000ft while being a short drive from sea level. NAU will just go through a down period with Smith leaving. The situation is bad for athletes who just showed up at NAU for Mike Smith‘s coaching not his assistant.
UVA and Notre Dame bad academically???? Are you kidding me, I know they’re not ivy but if you’re a smart kid that wants to still pursue academics AND run, UVA and ND are where to go. Not to mention the coaching. Chris Neal seems to be figuring it out and Vin Lanana, well that name speaks for itself

I think it was a joke. Calm down
According to what I’ve read here there’s only 1 school worth attending if you’re a great runner and student. Other than that, nowhere else
