Yes it is almost impossible to fathom that an old man would have seen “a lot more about everything.” How is this even possible?

What if all the comments you’ve ever made on LR all of a sudden disclosed your real name, available to all significant others, employers, etc… What would you do?
this type of breach would make Wikileaks and Equifax look like child’s play.
heading into the olympics I thought it'd be nice to have all the LetsRun podcasts available so I subscribed to the supporters club. one of the features is that you can follow registered users, and see all their posts. I had a lot of time on my hands and decided to try and figure out who a particular poster was. I'd followed a lot of their posts before, and was generally intrigued if they were being honest about their PRs/progression. wound up taking a super long time but I did eventually figure out who they were and they had been lying the whole time (sadly, but not unsurprisingly). their opinions/advice has become generally well respected on the boards because of all their claims, so now I'm just sitting here with all the evidence to discredit them but I don't know if I want to/know how to do it cause it just seems too mean. it does bug me that they pass themselves off as something they're not though. long story short, its not all too difficult to figure out someones identity on here, just kind of time consuming.
a local running club used to have a message board back in the early internet days, and it too allowed anonymous posting. people got their feelings hurt, and complained and complained, finally they required everyone to use their name.
when it was anonymous people would people would point out when a race was short, had poor traffic control, or started very very late, did not have water.. they would call stuff out that was bad. this helped inform the running community what races to avoid, etc..
once everyone's name was out there the board turned to garbage because nobody would be honest. it just became a big rah rah "you ran so great! blah blah blah"
Nothing you post online is really anonymous. As a rule of thumb, never post anything anywhere that you wouldn't want your mother, spouse, employer, or prosecuting attorney to see.

Posting would be a little different, but not much for most people. All the major posters on dyestat knew the other major posters idenntities and it was fine.

I’m sure the traffic to that board took a nosedive. That’s why I prefer the relative anonymity of this board.
I’m surprised at the people on this thread who embrace doxxing of people they don’t like or disagree with politically. Don’t you realize it’s a double edged sword? Once people start wrecking lives, no one is safe. It could destroy a board like ours. Not healthy at all.

Answer's simple. This site's traffic would plummet. While it was probably intended to be a running-specific forum, today it's a mishmash of political and social issue discourse with the occasional run convo. The anonymity brings out the worst.
Were there no anonymity, most posters would go elsewhere.
