Non financial issues aside (I realise by necessity they must earn a living in a short window) I would really like to see some on the top USA marathon runners go for a fast time on a known fast course - Valencia/Berlin come to mind. Mantz/Young/Albertson/Panning would be in that mix. Mantz has alluded to Tokyo and his reasoning seems sound.
They don't even have to go that far. Chicago would take them without a second thought. It wouldn't be hard to time trial a PB and take shots at the national or area record. Nothing is stopping them from going for it.
Panning, CJ, and Brian Shrader are running Chicago.
I fully understand there are different ways to achieve elite running results. But this guy has repeatedly posted hero-level training runs while not translating those into race day performances. There's no point in getting overexcited about this guy's potential marathon times until he actually delivers in a competitive race.
Workouts are not universal predictors of racing performances. Races are different than workouts. On a hard training run you're in control of most variables and usually in familiar territory. In a race you're usually away from home, maybe running at a time of day that isn't normal for you, you need to navigate your way through a crowd even if you're in the elite corral and it's a small crowd. You may need to deal with nerves and anxiety in a way that you don't in training. For some people a long run at five minute pace may indicate ability to do 4:50 or better in a race but all you can know from a 22 mile run at 5:00 is that whoever did it can run 22 miles at 5:00.
A little surprised the letsrun sleuths haven’t pointed out he had a 2:07 gap between his run time and elapsed time on the 22-miler.
Also, CJ did run the Valencia marathon 2 years ago and DNFd after some GI issues. (Same with Fauble in Berlin last year). To his credit he jumped into a windy/rainy marathon the following week and ran the 57th 2:11 of his career.
He did PR at the trials in fairly warm weather. Probably at least a mid-2:08 guy in Chicago next month if they get similar conditions as last year.
wishing the best for him. he is sort of wacky but more interesting that a lot of our other american men. if something goes wrong in Chicago he is also signed up for NYC too lol. just classic CJ again.
CJ runs with courage but he will never be a sub 2:08 guy until he breaks 62 minutes for a HM or 28:15 for 10k. He has currently maximized himself in the marathon.
I disagree. Yuki K has neither broken 62, nor 29:00. They are both aerobic monsters.
Help me out, but that has to indicate sub 2:08 ability and likely sub 2:07?
At least was right about him being ready to be best American in Chicago. Have to Imagine if he tapered better, it was less windy, and he had a group to run with he could have done sub 2:08 or maybe sub 2:07.
