With traditional training the tendency is that a peak can only be held around 6 weeks, as the endocrinal/hormonal system can't sustain that level longer. You can go from PR shape to off the cliff in a matter of a week.
For some of these runners you can add the post Olympic emotional deflation.
I think Jacob's training, being more threshold pace probably gives a longer peak, but he also didn't have to peak for his country's trials, and with his winter injury problems, he peaked later than most Olympians anyway.
