A very good idea. Helps to get around the way that the vertical jumps are the only events where beating a world record by tiny incremental gains is entirely controllable.

Bubka could 99% likely have gone higher in several of his competitions where he set a world record had he chose to vault on and take advantage of his form and flow.

The 5.92m clearance yesterday was even more impressive than the actual WR clearance as he was so far above and away from the bar at every point that it seemed as close to technical perfection as it gets as he was nowhere near to touching the bar and his high point was right above the bar. I reckon that vault would have been a 6.40m clearance had the bar been at that level and he still would not even have given it a little touch.

At some point they'll make super poles like they made super shoes then we'll really get rolling.

Mondo uses the same poles Bubka did. Mondo is likely benefitting from the new superspikes on the runway, Bubka definitely didn’t have those.

That's actually mind blowing to me. That's what I would expect if Mondo jump straight to 6.26 for his 1st WR instead of doing the incremental stuff.

Yes, but if you had 600,005,000 people, the 5000 most elite athletes would be doing pole vault, a sport that is dangerous, athletic and wildly fun. You'd then have 600million extra less athletic people regulated to distance running, a sport that is not nearly as dangerous, athletic, or fun.

Pole vault > 3,000m running.

You're suggesting that pole manufacturers still churn out identical poles as 30 years ago? That manufacture, materials and design aren't better?

A cursory look at pole vault reddit shows that's not true.

Even on the olympic video about pole vault tech they say "every manufacturer is constantly tinkering with materials and design"

The 3k record in comparison to the pole vault record is like the world record for holding your eyelids opened compared to the world record in fastest speed achieved in downhill skiing. Yes, billions more people have tried to not blink for an extended time than have tried skiing down the fastest ski slopes. It doesn't make holding your eyelids open more impressive. One sport takes superior athletic talent and guts to even compete in, the other seems kind of boring and takes little athletic talent... something that almost anyone can participate in to varying degrees of success. Distance running records are NOT impressive compared to mondo.

Did you read the prior post? The amount of competitors is irrelevant. If that is what mattered, simply living the longest should be considered the greatest athletic achievement, as everyone lives. By weighing what matters, the actual impressiveness of the athletic achievement, Mondo wins in a landslide. Running 7.5 laps around a track quickly is NOT impressive or particularly athletic. Vaulting 6.26m is. Mondo wins.

Even if 6.26m was 10th on the all time list, and the world record was 6.40, it would be a more impressive feat than 7:17 in the 3k.

Similar to how being 5th on the all time NBA scoring list is more impressive than the world record for the triple jump.

Mondo's WR attempts are boring. His biggest obstacle is the threat of falling asleep while attempting one.

Don't forget that Mondo is setting all of his records on short pegs, and with a slightly different crossbar than was used in Bubka's day (they shortened the pegs that the bar rests on from 75mm to 55mm circa 2003, and some years later changed some rules on the crossbar ends)

But we don’t know if jumping 6,26 is incredible good or not in a global and evolutionary perspective. More fascinating than running? Yeah maybe. But as long as the “n” is so low in pole vaulting it’s probably not so incredible.

Now, if you want to claim somehow that Mondo's record is more worth celebrating, that's fine. I don't believe it but go ahead, make the argument. But "upstage" is laughable, inarguably wrong.

His PV lead of the #2 all time guy exceeds Jakob's lead over Komen in the 3k.

Nonetheless, I am far more excited by Jakob's run and it did lead the news
