Nah, I'm pretty sure it's because he acts like a pompous a-hole most of the time.
He seems like a nice guy every time I see him interviewed on TV. He definitely comes off as more a real down to earth guy when compared to Tiger Woods. He also seems cooler than Colin Montgomery, though that isn't saying much.
So in summary, worry less about Phil Mickelson and more about yourself. I will do the same.
Firstly, Phil Mickelson is an incredibly nice and charitable guy; a real class act. You guys are sad.
Phil has been for the last several years one of the top three golfers in the world. Golf is for sure not as physically demanding as distance running, but it has it's physical challenges and I guarantee all of you would be wiped out playing 31 holes (most golfers, are "riders" these days, and have no idea what it feels like to walk a 7,000 yard course). Phil started hitting practice balls at sunup and finished just before sunset. Phil carries some extra weight, but oh yeah, he's not a marathon runner. He can accurately hit the ball a freaking mile all day long, and drop wedge shots on a dime, which takes more talent than most on this board, and puts him in that rare and minute group of insanely gifted athletes in the world. As he ages, I bet he will actually try to improve his fitness, but he spends every waking hour working on a game which has given him tons of success, money and a smoking, hot wife.
It is funny, but sad, that a bunch of skinny punks (most of whom will eventually be overweight before 40) can only pick on Phil's weight.
True fact: Scott Peterson played on the same high school golf team as Phil Mickelson.
As a golfer who hits left I'm very glad to see Phil win the masters, again. Mike Weir would have been even better.
Amen to that. Phil (AKA Lefty, or Hefty if you listen to Jim Rome) is by most accounts one of the coolest, most down to earth guys in the sport (I use that term loosely) of golf.
Much nicer guy than Vijay, who by the way is Fijian, not generally categorized as "black." Everybody says he's a total prick, despite being an unbelievable golfer.
Phil has a hot wife, cute kids, millions of dollars, and now he has two green jackets. That's a lot to be jealous of, but if you're a runner who's jealous of ANY golfer, you've got issues.
And as for the weight issue, it almost seems to help those guys to have a few extra lbs. on their frame. Look at Palmer and Nicklaus in their prime. But then again, Tiger is ripped and in great shape and he'll probably go down as the greatest ever.
