Hey, everybody! The new rules have taken effect and look at this American high school phenom that Oregon just signed! See, just win state and good things will happen for you!
This is actually a cool story. I’m pretty sure his dad died and there is a lot riding on him for his family. I do kinda wonder how this works as he can’t get NIL. This should push Whitmarsh and Cohen if he returns. Would be training with Cook/Birnbaum amongst others? NCAA mid-distance is going to be must-see.
The NIL for international students thing has become overblown in the conventional wisdom. International students can have NIL deals if the "work performed" is done in their home country. They just don't have work authorization in the US. Phil Knight should be able to pay him to email a pic of himself in Nikes before he gets on the plane.
It's entirely a question of immigration law and work authorization, not anything about "NIL" per se
Except you don’t know immigration law. Student visas allow you to work on campus. So all they need to do is to say nil is for on campus and it’s totally legal for foreigners
Unless you are a top 5 guy it’s going to be impossible for American kids to run D1 soon.
And if you want to go to Alabama you were never going to. Same with Arkansas, OK State, and a handful of other programs fueled by Africans who work hard and coaches who cant develop to save their lives.
He'll probably never run 1:42 again. The NCAA kills 800m runners more often than not. Clayton Murphy did well to snag the Olympic medal off an NCAA season, never reached that level again post-NCAA. Donavan Brazier, nuff said. We haven't even heard Will Sumner's name since he won.
Gee that's great. Now he can compete with 18 year old American kids. That won't be discouraging at all.
Where’s the outrage? First post to touch on this, yet a BYU kid forgoes running for two years and we’ve seen the hoopla on these boards regarding how unfair it is for the traditional high school kids.
Coaches in the NCAA, in many sports, are buying talent around the globe to boost their programs and themselves financially and/or to move to greener pastures. That comes at a cost to young talent in the US who have to over train during high school to post times to get a look from university coaches. Often because of this they are fried by the time they get to college or are injury prone.
Jerry’s coaching career has shifted in many ways. He can’t get talent to come to BTC. He can’t get talent to come to U of O. He can’t keep talent at U of O. He is buying proven talent now. Man how things have changed at U of O. The place where US middle and long distant talent would beg to come.
So does he really have the grades & test scores to get into school? If you recall Tobogo committed to the Ducks after the world's in Eugene, couldn't get him in.
Worked out for him though.
He did?? How uneducated do you have to be to not admitted in that case? Seriously, what grade level was he functioning at that he was unable to attend state U while also being a high end world class sprinter??
Almost 100% sure Tebogo realized there was no point going to college when he was one of the best sprinters in the world. Too talented, not too dumb.

It ‘damned if he does or damned if he doesn’t’ with some of you guys with a hard-on for Jerry. First of all..he’s ’attracted’ Birnbaum, Burns, Echohawk etc….so you are flat out wrong about his ability to draw talent to Eugene. He has a roster that’s predominantly Freshman and Soohomores (eligibility wise), with a Junior here, and a Senior there…and has supplemented with some transfers that will add depth for a year.
you guys smashed Jerry last year (where his main roster was also young), but the minute he brings in a Kenyan you go crazy! Damned if he does, damned if he don’t.
he’s developing those young (American kids) Harrison, Smith, Balazs, Del Barrio, Birmbaum, Burns, Echohawk, and will do the same with the new ones including Fasthorse…etc.
let’s keep some perspective before you lose your mind over one Kenyan 800m runner joining the squad.

Who is loosing his/her mind?
The sands in the hourglass do not lie. Time is ticking away for results thus the need.

Jerry might be the best recruiter of US talent.

How many of those talented kids are injured right now?
let’s talk about the other kids that are super talented as well but have left the program or are currently injured.

Based on his instagram bio ("Olympics champion 800m PB. 1.42.66") he barely speaks english, would be quite interesting to know indeed how they got him in
