The "startling conclusion" is that everyone could have run faster in a race that suited their requirements. But that isn't a championship race. So Jakob ends up 4th, that no mathematical hypothetical can change.
His problem was that he accelerated too fast somewhere around 100-300m into the race, and ran low 13. So, by the time he reached 800m, he was already in the well and as a result could not handle Kerr or especially Hocker--who had sub-3:27 in him without the obstruction from Jakob. Had he gone out more evenly and started in the low 56s or high 55s and gradually brought it down, he would have medaled and had a shot to win.
Agree! I just wonder if that was because of the wide lane he started in, & maybe the others went out faster than usual?

Yes 4th, not bad for a guy who is not a medal whore (10k would have been gold)

Bingo. I think he is very aware of this. Between having this lesson under his belt, pacers and lights, I predict WR or something very close to it at his next race.
The sit and kick strategy works for opportunistic scavengers.
Thats why in cycling Time Trials are called the race of truth.
Side note: One of the great things about having Peacock for the Olympics was the ability to watch things I had never watched before. The family watched the men's and women's individual time trial cycling events and they were great. Lots of fun.
I'd love to see this done as a footrace somewhere.

Nah don't be so green with innocence sir!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jakob is not breaking the 1500m WR in his lifetime I promise you sir!!!!!!!!!! He can execute all he wants, he will never achieve it because in all honesty his biomechanics is not cut for it. If he does break it, it's not due to his effort and work at all, absolutely not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing about his body, fitness, biomechanics, level of monk-liness trumps those of the real MONK Hicham El King Guerrouj the eternal WR holder at 1500m, you feeling me sir?????
Jakob would need to wear a turbopropulsion suit to run 3:25!!!!!

Nerves maybe?
Jakob used the word "excitement" adding his legs felt great and he just got carried away. And then made another mistake when Kenyan runners opened a little gap which he saw and accelerated even more, and that was still before 800m mark.
I think some people underestimate the energy savings of drafting, especially as speeds increase. A prior study showed that even at 4:30 per mile pace, there is essentially a one second savings per 400m. At Jakob's speed, it's clear he spent significant extra energy that cost him dearly in the final 400.
The most relevant research on the effects of drafting and wind resistance, see:
You think he doesn't know he spent significant extra energy that would costs him sir???? Then why did he choose to run this way then????? Is he daft or what sir????? Of all the choices he can choose to run the race to beat KERR and win gold he chose most dumb of them all which is to lead from wire to wire!!!!! Why can't he go like last year from 1000m to go???? Or from 2022 with 800m to go????? Why why why sir??????
Why are you making all these coulda, shoulda, woulda rationalizations for him after the fact when all these should have been done by him and his team??????

Come on sir????? Who isn't excited in an Olympic final???? Who doesn't have nerves tell me sir?????? You are making ridiculous excuses for Jakob and why is that sir????
Jakob knew he would lose the race leading wire to wire, it's that simple, it's not because he was excited and got carried away. Well Josh Kerr got excited at Budapest in the final 200m when he found out Jakob looked strangely tame in his kick and got excited and took a chance to ramp up the speed to overtake him. Josh Kerr got carried away as well running wide with longer distance side by side with Jakob thinking he could beat him this way again like Wightman did the previous year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But Kerr won the race and all that excitement and carrying away didn't cause him any disadvantage right????????????????
Please think harder sir!!!!! Really, the level of reason and persuasion on this board is kindergarden!!!!!! If Jakob thinks the reason of his loss of gold is still due to excitement and getting carried away, then you folks need to teach him that wasn't the case. It was Hocker's superb PED timing instead!!!

I meant to say Jakob is not breaking the 1500m WR in his lifetime fair and square with the previous generation of athletes like Hicham El King Guerrouj.
I want to see Jakob donning not aerodynamic tracksuit apparel but El G's cumbersome and wind dragging running shorts and singlet, and El G's lousy spike shoes and also El G's lousy track surface to run 3:25!!!!!!!

You are not interested in science. Why don't you shut up for once?
It’s an interesting analysis because it shows that Jakob would have to be in at minimum 3:25.5 shape for his front running strategy in Paris to have been successful. Maybe he’ll get there by 2028

HUH???? The OP and scientific researcher wasn't all that scientific either sir!!!!!!! They were dabbling rather in fantasy!!!!!!! A championship race is a real thing. My Armstrong is right!!!!!

Due you're on bad drugs, and not those that enhance performance. Can't wait to hear you claim DRUGS when Jakob breaks the WR in 1500/mile. Then the 5000 WR. Guaranteed.
Startling conclusion is typical tv2. Nothing startling about the conclusion. It is common knowledge that pacers are worth a lot. Before this article I would guess 2-3 seconds on Jakob's level. Hence the article was exactly as expected. It is quite clear that Jakob is in WR shape.
If he has kept his shape the 3000 m record is quite likely to fall in Silesia August 25 th.
