He needs to pay his competition to pacemaker for him, he has no kick regardless of the speed of the race. Only way he'll ever win is if someone else paces him.
The "kicking" comments are dumb. I'm not sure if many of you ran 1500s competitively?
"Kicking" in a fast race is purely a function of fitness and knowing how much you have left to time your drive for home.
Top and speed and ability to accelerate does matter in a slower race.
The bottom line from today is that it's really hard to lead gun to tape in a 1500m. You usually won't win unless you are much better than the field (probably two seconds +). Jakob is probably the fittest of all the guys in the field, but not by that much.
His best bet is probably to ramp it up from 700m out and fend off any challenges on the final lap. He might still lose, but it's a better chance than trying to go out hard like he did.
Why would he want to shorten the race against kickers like Kerr and Hocker?
El G had nothing like this competition today, only Lagat was a serious threat in his prime when running 3:27 pace races.
He never had to tighten up in the stretch off of his WR pace. With guys like Kerr, Hocker, Nuguse breathing down his throat, Jakob tends to tighten and lose his momentum.
Kind of unrelated, but I believe Monaco was the worst thing that could have happened to Jakob. Running 3:26.7 and in such a visibly dominant fashion against Cheruiyot, Nuguse, and Komen probably was a key factor in his overconfidence today -- even without pacers, his victory in Monaco was so great he probably believed he could do the same today.
I agree that Jakob's smooth 3:26.7 PR a few weeks ago likely gave him confidence he was in WR shape. It also seems logical to me that going out in 54.8 was part of the plan; I don't think he ever bothered to visualize a tactical win. After all, this is a fellow who's been telegraphing his desire for GOAT status for years now, and probably really believed he could run 3:25 tonight on the world's biggest stage. However, when you watch the replay, you could see a bit of concern on his face at the bell. And with 80m to go, there was nothing left. You have to tip your hat to Jakob for making the race; however, at this point after losing three major championship 1500s, his best bet for immortality will likely consist of 3000-5000m records, with maybe a 10,000m surprise.
Jakob certainly made a pacing error today, going out too fast in the first lap.
My opinion is that he made a strategic error, too, in trying to lead from the front for the whole damn race. People seem to think it is his only option to win, but I would like to see him sit in the pack and try to take it from 600 go one of these years.
Jakob's personal issues came back to bite him. If only there was someone from the same country who could have paced Jakob for a lap or so and helped ensure his win. Someone coached by a relative...hmm.
Jakob said the plan was 56 for the first lap, he got carried away and decided to keep going with it rather than slow down. With 100 to go he hit the wall.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen will be the only man to win Olympics 1500m 5000m 10,00m and finally the marathon. It's only a mater of time. I have a felling his will hold all the world records. He's become a Henry Rono type figure

Jakob is still going to set the WR in the 1500 one day but I don't think he can ever be the favorite in a championship style race again after the last 2 years. The field is just way too good.
Besides being overconfident, I think Jakob peaked at Monaco and he was just not ready to go that fast again after 2 heats of the 1500. Give Jakob a 6 weeks time and he’ll setup a WR run this Fall and get the record.
I believe so too. That's 3:39 mile pace, totally unnecessary. And because Komen dropped in behind that meant the Americans were actually able to use him as a pacesetter and not have to lose contact while running a little slower that first lap. Jakob could've gone out in 56 (3:44 pace) which still is close to WR pace but not enough to empty his tank at the end, which is what happened. He was only .6 out of first as it turned out but he paid for that fast first lap in last 100.
Yes that's correct. Jakob is really washed up now, loses to KERR yet again and I told you KERR would beat Jakob except I didn't foresee those American cheats benefiting so much from the drugs to actually beat KERR and Jakob at the same time??????????
This is BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
