We’ve seen someone dominate the pole vault like this before: Sergey Bubka. Mondo is essentially a modern day version of Bubka. Nobody has ever dominated the shot put like Ryan Crouser.
I might consider him the most dominant athlete in the sport all-time, but not the greatest, for many of the reasons listed above. In an event that it is easy to just totally mess up in, he is a lock every time out at this point. He also completely destroys his competition. He won by 30cm tonight (in what may have been the deepest pv competition ever)! He broke the olympic record by over 8 inches! 2nd place was closer to 11th than to first (as it almost always is). He was 5% better than anyone else tonight. That's like winning the 100m by 0.5 seconds, winning the marathon by 6 minutes, winning the high jump by 4.5 inches, winning the triple jump by 3 feet, winning the 400m or 400m hurdles by over 2 seconds.
Yes, Crouser is the greatest field eventer of our era, and I might not even rank Mondo as the greatest pole valuter all time yet, if we include women, but his level of dominance right now is up there with anyone else in history.
lol not close. he's a total coward who deliberately tries to only break the WR by the tiniest amount so he can keep breaking it. a mediocre showman who can trick the gullible (most of you lot) into thinking they're watching something extraordinary. not my champion
To equal that feat, one would have to accomplish the following:
100m: 9.28
200m: 18.60
400m: 41.46
800m: 1:37.23
1500m: 3:20.72
5k: 12:31.63
Marathon: 2:01:50
110mhurdles: 12.44
Shot put: 24.15m
Dec: 9347 pts
Obviously not all events are created equally, and the PV is the the 1st or 2nd most niche of all events (maybe decathlon is more so?), but his level of dominance is unprecedented in the modern era.

Disagree. Crouser has lost championship competitions in his prime. Mondo is undefeated since coming of age.
If he goes out and jumps 6.40 he loses out on all the WR bonuses he would get by gradually increasing 1cm at time. Pole vaulting is his job and it's a financial decision. I'd do the same.

i don't blame him i just don't find it interesting
Simply the goat of Pole Vault. Like other people have said, it’s very niche. In my opinion, Crouser is *probably* the field GOAT, but Carl Lewis might be better, even without the WR. For the Track… hmmm… Probably Bekele or Bolt.
can we at least all agree to never talk about field events again? let them break their little fake world records over and over - only as long as they don't junk up the track feed by cutting to field. no wants to see this

So what you're saying is he's actually hiding his true power level and he's actually even more dominant over the field than what he shows us in competition?
Hate threads like this, he is a good athlete, he is not great, he is great at pole vaulting, but and this is a big, but. What do you think an elite NFL player could do in pole vault ??(hint better then Mondo) BUT THEY WON"T EVER DO IT.
Congrats to Mondo and enjoy, I think if he had a rival and was beaten once or twice, people would love him more, this cm by cm world record crap has got to go....boring

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. I'm saying Mondo is not the first person to dominate the pole vault in the way he has. Before him, Sergey Bubka similarly racked up gold medals and world records in that event. Bubka broke the world record 35 times.
In contrast, nobody has won anything close to as many gold medals in the shot put as Ryan Crouser.
Crouser's shot put dominance is unprecedented. Mondo's dominance in the pole vault is very much precedented.

I don't think elite NFL players are coming close to beating Mondo, just like much faster/taller decathletes don't come close to beating him either. Ashton Eaton had above average NFL speed and jumping ability and wasn't within 2.5 feet of Mondo in the pole vault. You are underrating the importance of technique and gymnastics ability that goes into the event and overrating pure speed/jump/strength athleticism.
GOAT status for all of T&F requires dominance in multiple events. Carl Lewis had the long jump & 100, Bolt in the 100 & 200, Bekele in the 5k & 10k, etc...
No. I have yet to see anyone mentioned who comes close to Carl Lewis -- four consecutive Olympic golds in the long jump (including 65 straight wins over a decade, and probably a majority of the top twenty or more longest jumps in history, with 71 jumps over 28 feet); best 100m, 200m, and 100 x 4 relay runner for a very long time; 9 Olympic golds (and one silver); 8 world championship golds (and one silver and one bronze); greatest athlete of the twentieth century according to the IOC, the IAAF (now World Athletics), Track & Field News, and Sports Illustrated.
