Rupp not only has the marathon hardware- he has a Major win, he has other notable podiums, and he has the non-khannouchi AR. He is well proven at the marathon. Fisher has a long way to go. He can do something Rupp never did though by snagging the record over 13.1 too
He already beat all Rupp's records. The only thing missing was olympic medals, and now he has one. Yes, silver > bronze, but arguably the field was much better this year than in 2012. And Fisher was a whisker away from silver. 3k PR: Fisher 7:25, Rupp 7:30 2mi PR: Fisher 8:03, Rupp 8:07 5k PR: Fisher 12:46, Rupp 12:58 10k PR: Fisher 26:33, Rupp 26:44 Olympic finishes: 10k: Fisher 3rd & 5th, Rupp 2nd & 5th 5k: Rupp 6th, Fisher 9th
It is close - if Fisher can place in top 5 in the 5k next week, he has an even better case as GOAT.
This field was significantly deeper than when Farah and Rupp went 1-2.
Fisher again ran faster than Rupp’s PR… to get 3rd in an Olympic final!
Add in Fisher’s recent World Championship finishes and it proves he’s every bit as competitive as Rupp on the world stage.
As for the shoes: how much are they worth? We must define it. The pre-super shoe WR in the 5K and 10K were 12:37 and 26:17, right? And now they’re 12:35 and 26:11, 20 years later? How super are these shoes?

For sure, I think the Bronze Medal basically cements him into the best distance runner in American History. Hope he moves the half marathon soon and takes a crack at Ryan Hall's HM PB. Grant can go Sub 59 for sure.
No disrespect to Rupp, but that bronze comes with a huge asterisk. He got that bronze with a Vaporfly prototype when it's not available to many other runners he beat in the race.

Something like 13 or 14 runners ran under 27 mins last night. Did anyone get close to 27 mins when Farah and Rupp finished 1-2?
Rupp allowed this crop of American distance runners to have these expectations. When rupp was dominating, we weren’t making finals or coming even close to medaling. Rupp showed Americans what was possible again like back in the day.
Lagat and Ryun for 1500/5000, Rupp and Shorter for 10,000/Marathon. Grant is a bit in between those two groups but more of the Rupp/Shorter style. No, he has not surpassed Rupp. Rupp had a more successful NCAA career, has many more national titles (Grant "broke through" by finally winning this time around), 2 Oly medals, at least one (maybe more?) DL wins, won a major (Chicago) etc.
Grant has a path to being better but isn't there yet IMO.
In the marathon, Khannouchi >>>> Rupp
Neither Rupp nor Fisher are anywhere near the American distance goat (Shorter or Ryun or Lagat).
Yes, he is the GOAT. One more medal puts the nail in the coffin for Rupp. You can't be significantly slower at every single distance and be considered the GOAT. Rupp also ran in a much weaker era for distance running. Fisher is contending with the current WR holder, and a slew of 12:4x and 26:3x guys every year, Rupp did not. Even the domestic competition that Fisher faces is miles ahead of anyone that Rupp faced, with multiple sub-13 and sub-26 guys the past few years. Just as an example, the year Rupp won his silver, only 4 guys ran sub-27 whereas this year that number was 24.
You can cry about super shoes all you want, but the fact is that track and field is just better now than it was 12 years ago, which includes Fisher.

Which one is it? He needs another medal but is already the GOAT? You're counting medals but they don't matter if you're faster? Fisher had no wins but was the GOAT with ARs? Now he just needs one more...

Fisher's already the GOAT in my opinion, but one more medal will make it not even a conversation anymore by taking away any argument that you might have for Rupp. That's what "put the nail in the coffin" means. With another medal, you could say that Fisher has more medals than Rupp, which is the only argument you could make for Rupp being the US track distance GOAT.

If you're going to go there, maybe the bulk of his career is tainted by association with A.S.

Not yet, but he certainly has the ability to do so.
I doubt it's his personality but... he really needs to be heavily promoted. He's smart, fast, good looking. American distance runners CRAVE someone they can be PROUD to look up to.
